My client a reputable and established professional membership body based in Central London is currently searching for a Policy Officer,
Experience in a similar policy role from either a government department, political party, parliamentary, cabinet, committees, committee, lobbying, trade association, professional body, government, think tank in fire safety, building safety, accommodation, residential property, housing, property, retail, enterprise, town centre, planning, high streets, real estate, or hospitality would be by no means essential but desirable.
The Role
The Policy Officer will support the membership bod’s policy team by providing a timely, credible, and effective lobbying service for its members.
Key Roles and Responsibilities
Supporting public affairs campaigns on clearly focused issues to change Government policy. The membership body seeks to set its members’ agenda and not merely react to the Government’s programme.
Articulating members’ interests to key opinion formers and by doing so encouraging Government to provide a conducive political and regulatory environment.
Initiating and responding to consultations on issues of importance to members to ensure their opinions and policy positions are clearly expressed.
Ensuring that the voice is strong within government departments and other forums where policy is made; within Westminster (for instance by preparing briefings for MPs).
Establishing and maintaining positive relationships with outside organisations, to contribute to the lobbying influence. These would include other related organisations, other lobbyists, political parties and think tanks.
Interacting professionally with the members and servicing the internal committees and working parties: organising meetings, preparing agendas and papers, and writing minutes.
Working with chairs of committees to ensure committee structures are diverse and well balanced.
Work with the membership team to flag new member opportunities.
Devising and delivering events for members to promote their greater understanding of policy issues and the dissemination of good practice.
Monitoring, researching, promoting related issues including parliamentary business.
Engaging with the young persons network – Futures.
Contributing content to and keeping up to date the website and member portal.
Undertaking such other duties as may reasonably be required.
Person Specification
ESSENTIAL
An interest in, and broad understanding of, the UK political and Parliamentary processes.
Relevant work experience ideally in a role developing and/or analysing policy
The ability to analyse complex issues and disseminate the information clearly and concisely to a non-technical audience.
The ability to manage and prioritise a competing workload effectively, with limited supervision.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Influencing skills ideally including experience utilising campaigns and/or lobbying techniques
