Job overview
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a compassionate, highly motivated HIV Clinical Nurse Specialist to join our team to support with the ED BBV testing programme. You should have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, a genuine passion for caring for patients with HIV and life long conditions and a understanding of how to support newly diagnosed patients.
The HIV Clinical Nurse Specialist is responsible for providing quality individualised nursing care for patients with HIV, their relatives / carers in the community and within the Trust settings.
The Nurse Specialist will work in collaboration with the multi-disciplinary team and will provide professional nursing leadership and guidance, expert clinical advice and education for the delivery of an effective service, in line with local and national targets, Trust policies and procedures.
Main duties of the job
* Working autonomously as an advanced practitioner to deliver specialist clinical care appropriate to the needs of individual HIV patients in line with research based principles;
* Perform advanced assessments to reflect the patients’ social, psychological, emotional and physical needs at initial diagnosis and before commencing or switching antiretroviral therapy.
* Perform initial assessments of unwell patients, liaising with / referring to HIV Consultants or other MDT members as appropriate. Demonstrate in-depth understanding of HIV co-infections and co-morbidities screening and monitoring in complex situations.
* Monitor and review plans of care with patients to meet individual needs, referring to HIV Consultants or other members of the MDT if required.
* Manage own caseload of HIV patients in line with local and national guidelines;
* Maintain patients’ confidentiality, dignity and respect at all times.
* Carry out extended skills such as history taking, physical examinations and ordering investigations.
* Review and interpret investigations / tests results to identify when changes to treatment need to be made.
* Required to discuss treatment options with patients and ensure good adherence to medications. You will act as a point of contact and advocate for disclosure of HIV status.
