This post is aimed to deliver high-quality Same Day Emergency Care for general medical patients, within the Trust. This post offers candidates the unique opportunity to contribute to the further development of the service.
The appointment will be 10 PA's. Holidays are agreed within the team as per the departmental holiday rules and must be requested in line with Trust policy, at least 6 weeks in advance.
1.5 of the PAs is allocated as SPA time, 0.5 of which may be worked off site, by prior agreement. It is also envisaged that the post holder may undertake occasional ad hoc duties which will be paid separately.
The post holder will be required to demonstrate both at appraisal and to the Clinical Lead for Acute Medicine (and/or the Associate Medical Director) how they have utilised their SPA time. The on-site SPA time is to be used for the purposes of CPD, audit, management, training and education.
Your normal place of work will be within the Medical SDEC Unit at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary. In an emergency, you may be asked to work at any site within the Trust.
ON CALL
There is NIL On Call associated with this post, though the regular shift pattern does include weekend working, as part of a team.
Main duties of the job
* To be responsible for the delivery of general medical care for patients referred to the Same Day Emergency Care Unit (SDEC).
* To review referrals made to the unit and to thus supervise appropriately referred patients, ensuring clinics run on time and that full documentation, including discharge letters to other specialties/GPs etc. are accurate, comprehensive and timeously completed.
* To ensure, with acute medical colleagues, that the SDEC Unit provides an effective service 7 days a week, as established by the Care Group/Trust, working to and within national and local standards. This does require a 1 in 4 weekend rota.
* It is expected that the appointee will join in the running of Review Clinics in the Department, and share the management of patients under the care of the Acute Physicians as part of the Emergency Floor and help achieve national key performance indicators for Emergency Care (SDEC).

We operate from three main hospitals - Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community health care premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.
FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services. WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.
All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.
Our community services for adults are provided in people's homes, community centres, clinics, GP Practices, community hospitals and our main hospitals. Our aim is to work with people to help them remain independent, improve their health and manage their conditions through high quality care, advice and support.
