Our Technology team also continues to go from strength to strength and we are involved in some incredibly exciting and innovative initiatives across the firm. Rather than being considered a necessary support function, our Technology department is an integral part of the strategy of the firm, and this is reflected both by the level of tech investment and how Technology initiatives are discussed at the most senior level.
The Role
As a Principal Data Scientist & Analyst, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the Firm's data strategy, bridging advanced analytics with business intelligence, and leading the development of enterprise-wide data solutions. You will be responsible for designing, implementing, and overseeing data science, analytics, and reporting initiatives that drive strategic decision-making across the Firm and the wider Mishcon group.
Your work will span predictive analytics, machine learning, reporting, and data visualisation, ensuring that insights are actionable and aligned with business goals. You will lead the delivery of scalable solutions, from intuitive Power BI dashboards and certified data models to the development of AI/ML capabilities that support both operational and legal teams. You will support the evolution of the firm's target data architecture, ensuring the certification and maintenance of high-quality data models.
As we transition to a Hub-and-Spoke operating model, you will contribute to defining the analytics roadmap our regional hubs, GCC, including the development of data access governance for teams outside the UK structure. You will also play a key role in upskilling the firm through the Academy, delivering ongoing training to improve data literacy and empower self-serve analytics.
Additionally, you will line manage a team of data scientists and analysts, setting team direction, managing performance, and defining priorities in alignment with the Firm's strategic goals.
Duties and Responsibilities
Data Strategy & Transformation
1. Lead the firm's data science and analytics strategy aligned with the wider transformation roadmap.
2. Set a clear vision and define strategic goals for data science and analytics use cases during the Firm's wider transformation.
3. Support a wider rollout of the firm's AI strategy, helping to identify user cases for the "Business of Law" and working with the product and data engineering teams to prototype and develop.
4. Act as a key contributor to the Hub-and-Spoke model, supporting the establishment of analytics spokes (e.g., GCC) and driving upskilling initiatives through formal training and internal knowledge-sharing via the Academy.
5. Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders, data governance and data engineering team to identify, prioritise, and deliver high-impact data initiatives.
6. Ownership of the decommissioning of legacy reporting platforms (such as SSRS) and rationalisation of unused or duplicate Power BI reports, ensuring that our reporting ecosystem remains clean, modern, and aligned to firm-wide standards.
Target Architecture & Data Governance
1. Oversee the development, certification, and ongoing maintenance of reusable data models, ensuring consistency, documentation, and alignment with enterprise architecture.
2. Support the development of governance processes for data access and stewardship, especially across international teams such as the GCC.
3. Establish and maintain reporting frameworks that ensure accuracy and consistency.
4. Lead initiatives to enhance reporting capabilities and improve data/reporting literacy across departments.
Team Leadership & Collaboration
1. Manage, mentor and guide a team of data scientists and analysts.
2. Work cross-functionally with legal, finance, business development, technology and other teams as required.
3. Promote innovation and continuous improvement in data analytics.
Advanced Analytics & Strategic Thinking
1. Lead the development of business-facing Power BI dashboards and self-serve analytics tools.
2. Develop and deploy machine learning models and statistical analyses for predictive insights.
3. Integrate AI/ML, NLP, and LLMs into business intelligence solutions.
4. Work with data engineers to build robust data pipelines and optimize data workflows.
5. Conduct research and develop prototypes and proof of concepts to demonstrate value and feasibility of advanced analytics and reporting solutions.
6. Stay up to date with the latest industry trends and emerging technologies in data science, analytics, and reporting.
Skills/Experience
Essential
1. 4-6 years of experience working in data science and analytics, preferably in a law firm.
2. Proficiency in Python, SQL, and Power BI- hands-on experience in data science, business intelligence, and reporting.
3. Experience in the core Python libraries used for in data science, including Pandas, Numpy, and Matplotlib is essential.
4. Strong understanding of statistical concepts and analytics/machine learning techniques, including regression, classification, clustering, NLP, and dimensionality reduction.
5. Experience with Azure Cloud Services and Synapse Analytics, Synapse ML (or similar cloud-based data platforms).
6. Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, with a focus on delivering measurable business impact.
7. Strong leadership and stakeholder management skills- ability to engage with senior executives, legal teams, and technical teams.
8. Ability to translate complex technical concepts into clear and concise insights for non-technical stakeholders.
Desirable
1. Experience in data warehouse architecture, ETL processes, dimensional modelling and performing data quality checks.
2. Understanding of Power Automate and PowerApps for workflow automation.
3. Familiarity with data governance, security, and compliance best practices.
