Cable Design Engineer Technical Clerk, Glasgow
We have a job opportunity for a Cable Design Engineer Technical Clerk, Glasgow which is a new and unique role contracted through Risktec Solutions Ltd for EDF requirements and is office based/hybrid in Glasgow with travel to Sizewell B Power Plant on an as needed basis. The ability to drive and have use of own car is essential for this position.
Role Summary
We are looking for a motivated engineer / technician with an electrical focus to work with the EDF Electrical Design Team in Glasgow (6 Atlantic Quay, Robertson Street, Glasgow, G2 8JD) as a Cable Design and cable routing Engineer / Technician. The role will involve control of the cable design management tool – CADMEC – used for managing the configuration, routing and status of electrical cables on EDF Nuclear sites. The role includes data entry to the power stations circuit, cable and equipment database, the design of cable and circuit routes that permit modification works on plant and technical reviews of electrical design aspects of proposed modifications against the Nuclear Sites design requirements. Training on the use of the cable management tool will be provided as well as mentoring.
The successful candidate will have a keen interest in a career in the nuclear industry and be driven to work and learn valuable skills in a dynamic environment. The successful candidate will work alongside experienced Electrical, System and Project Engineers to support the safe and reliable operation of existing electrical systems, as well as major new modifications to plant as part of plant lifetime extension activities on EDF Nuclear sites.
Disciplines Considered
We will consider candidates who have the following disciplines at a BEng / BSc level / degree equivalent, or with relevant industrial / technical clerk experience:
1. Physics
2. Electrical Engineering
Relevant experience in industrial cabling design, or an electrical role is beneficial, but not expected.
Duration of Position
Full-time (38h/week) initial fixed duration of 1 year, with a view to make permanent on completion of the initial contract. The role will commence in early 2025, subject to completion of the security vetting process.
The Role
The successful applicant will be based in Glasgow, with time split between both the EDF and Risktec offices (9 George Square, Glasgow G2 1DY) in the city centre. Anticipated 2-3 days per week within the EDF offices, – hybrid working will be available on agreement with EDF and Risktec line management during the role tenure. Some infrequent travel to SZB may be requested. Any costs associated with travel to Sizewell B will be covered by expenses.
The role may also include visits to Sizewell B power station (IP16 4UR). The role requires attendance at regular engineering meetings and the chairing of CADMEC meetings and the coordination of work requests from stakeholders. Progression through the role will include managing a small team of engineers/technicians executing CADMEC related tasks and providing training on the CADMEC system to engineers and technicians.
As a cable design engineer / technician, you will work alongside a team of experienced engineers across the central and site-based teams. The role will involve the management of the cabling tool and will directly support projects involved in modifications to major plant items and enabling long term operation at Sizewell B. On a day to day basis, this work will involve, but is not limited to the following:
1. Support to the management of cabling design and management via the CADMEC tool. This will involve:
o Operation and manipulation of the cable management tool.
o Data entry into the cable management tool.
o Technical reviews of site modifications within the cable management tool and ensuring compliance with site regulations.
2. Ensuring that project risk is managed throughout station processes and that quality is maintained through all aspects of the engineering process.
3. Assist in providing technical advice and guidance to the project teams on site.
As part of this role, you will gain a broad and in depth understanding of risk management, design and operations within a large generating site.
There have been many Risktec junior engineers who have been employed at Sizewell B recently to support project delivery allowing long term operation of the station. A development and mentoring strategy, with oversight from Risktec Principal Engineers, will be in place to ensure that the successful candidate is provided with the training and support required.
Security Clearance Checks
Due to the nature of the work, the candidates must have a suitable background that will allow them to achieve UK security clearance (please note that this is very difficult to achieve within the timescales for non-UK nationals, and you will be subject to a screening process prior to interview to ensure that you meet the security clearance criteria).
