Overview:
First Military Recruitment are currently seeking a Senior Structural Engineer on behalf of one of our clients. Our client encourages applications from ex-military personnel; however, all candidates will be given due consideration.
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Report to and take direction from the Partner or Associate leading the structural engineering team.
2. Represent the company in a client-facing role, managing projects from inception to completion, ensuring that deliverables align with the project programme, required quality standards, and budget constraints.
3. Provide financial performance reports for projects and assess resourcing requirements, supporting senior management in team resource allocation and commercial direction.
4. Act as lead or sole designer based on project size and complexity, overseeing all phases from initial scheme development to detailed design and technical deliverables.
5. Conduct structural analysis and design in compliance with EuroCode suite of design codes, ensuring economic, sustainable, efficient, and buildable solutions.
6. Review and verify calculation packages, drawings, specifications, reports, and other project deliverables, ensuring adherence to quality assurance procedures.
7. Supervise and mentor junior engineers, technicians, and apprentices, playing an active role in their professional development.
8. Perform surveys and inspections, producing high-quality technical reports with recommendations and presenting findings to clients when necessary.
9. Conduct assessments of existing buildings in compliance with the Building Safety Act, including managing intrusive investigations on-site.
10. Undertake site visits during construction to resolve queries, monitor progress, and provide guidance to contractors.
Skills and Qualifications:
1. PhD, EngD, MEng, BSc, or MSc in a field relevant to structural engineering, ideally recognized by the Washington Accord or Engineering Council.
2. Chartered (or near-chartered) and a Member or Graduate Member of either the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE) or the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE).
3. Strong communication skills in both written and spoken English, including technical report writing.
4. Proven experience in designing structures using concrete, steel, masonry, and timber.
5. Familiarity with Finite Element Design, ideally using SCIA Engineer.
6. Experience with 2D and 3D structural design packages such as TEKLA Structural Designer, TEDDS, Masterseries, etc.
7. Working knowledge of Building Information Modelling (BIM) and experience in a 3D environment.
8. Proficiency in AutoCAD and Revit is beneficial but not essential.
9. Demonstrable experience in projects of similar scale and complexity, with an understanding of key forms of building construction.
10. Proven ability to work in a client-facing role, perform surveys and inspections, and assist contractors on-site.
11. A collaborative, confident, and ambitious team player, capable of working independently with minimal supervision.
12. Good commercial awareness with experience in project management.
13. Awareness of sustainability principles in structural design and the ability to implement sustainable options.
14. A valid UK driving licence.
