Job summary Cardiff and Vale Health Board has recently redesigned its Gastroenterology services to provide a centralised service at the University Hospital of Wales with a focussed on planned care at the University Hospital of Llandough with one of the largest endoscopy units in wales. Cardiff and Vale are committed to promoting and supporting the every expanding expertise that nursing brings services across our organisation and as such have introduced a Consultant Nurse in Gastroenterology to support the operational and strategic vision for our nurse specialist workforce. The Consultant Nurse will be an expert in their chosen clinical field (e.g. Clinical Endoscopist, Hepatology, Inflammatory Bowel Disease) however the individual will bring clinical leadership and provide strategic direction to the Gastroenterology Service ensuring that the specialist nursing workforce expands and develops to maximise potential to improve the outcome and experience of patients. Main duties of the job The Nurse Consultant will play a pivotal role in leading clinical practice within the gastroenterology Department and is a key member of the Directorates Senior Team. The Nurse Consultant will be a recognised expert nurse in leading clinical practice and will have direct clinical involvement with patients attending/contacting the Emergency Unit, inpatient, out-patient clinics and Advice Lines. The Nurse Consultant will develop and lead expert nursing practice across gastroenterology in partnership with the Lead Nurse, providing professional leadership and consultancy to all staff groups in both the community and hospital setting. In collaboration with the wider MDT and local networks, they will develop, deliver high quality, patient focussed clinical services in line with national standards for care. The Nurse Consultant will act as an independent practitioner implementing advanced clinical nursing skills to assess, diagnose, treat and prescribe plans of care and be fully responsible for a designated patient case load, in their given field of expertise. They will provide leadership and overall clinical responsibility for the nursing service in their chosen field of expertise at the Health Board, providing autonomous nurse led services. They will have an active and visible role in the development and delivery of training in their field driving expert practice through evidence-based care, clinical audits and research to ensure maintenance of clinical excellence.
