Job Details: Volunteer SMART Co-Facilitator
Waythrough launched in October 2024 following the merger of Humankind and Richmond Fellowship. Our vision is to break down the barriers that stop people getting the support they need to live a life they value. We tackle poverty and disadvantage in communities through mental health, drug and alcohol, housing and related support.
We have almost 200 services around England and nearly 3,500 amazing staff and volunteers who run them. Every year our services support around 125,000 people.
Location: Barnstaple
Together Drug and Alcohol Service is the commissioned community drug and alcohol provision for Devon. It provides a range of support, interventions and treatments for adults wanting to make positive changes to their drug and/or alcohol use, as well as supporting family members and running campaigns and events that raise awareness of addiction and celebrate recovery in the community.
About the role
We are looking for a volunteer to support with the facilitation of a new SMART Recovery meeting, based at our Barnstaple Hub in North Devon. The role is ideally suited to people with lived experience of recovery, either directly or through supporting a close friend or family member, although we welcome applications from anyone with an empathetic, non-judgemental attitude. Volunteers in this role will be involved in meeting facilitation, welcoming newcomers and empowering everyone in the meeting to contribute, should they wish to.
SMART Recovery is a four-point programme focusing on any form of addictive behaviour, through building and maintaining motivation, managing thoughts, feelings, and emotions, coping with urges, and building a balanced lifestyle. SMART focuses on future recovery success rather than past experiences. If not already trained, volunteers will need to complete the full SMART Recovery UK facilitator training programme.
Tasks may include:
* Share a group agreement at the start of each session, including respect and confidentiality.
* Facilitate meetings according to the SMART Recovery Meeting Structure – including a check-in, agenda setting, and check-out.
* Report any concerns, including related to safeguarding, that may arise in the group.
* Link closely with the group lead to plan and evaluate sessions.
* Procure necessary resources such as flip chart, paper and pens.
* Support the group lead with any tasks linked to the running of the SMART group, e.g., complete SMART audits and liaise with Regional SMART Community Coordinator.
If you are a good communicator, have an interest and passion for group-based support, and can empathise with people working towards addiction recovery, then we would love to hear from you. Good IT skills will be required for this role.
As a volunteer with Waythrough, you can expect to receive:
* Regular supervision and support
* Induction and access to online and face-to-face training
* To learn and practice new skills within a teamwork setting
* To feel part of a team and the wider Waythrough organisation
* Reasonable travel expenses reimbursed with proof of journey
* Opportunities to progress and experience other areas of Waythrough's work
