Job Description:
Volunteering & Community Officer - Berkhamsted
Summary
We're looking for someone to join the team at Ashridge Estate on a two-year fixed term contract as a Volunteer & Community Officer.
As a key member of the property and project teams, you’ll be joining at an exciting and pivotal point in the estate’s history as we develop transformational plans to look after this special place for future generations as part of the ‘Protecting Our Roots’ project.
Working outdoors in all weathers, you’ll build relationships with visitors and the local community by sharing your love of conservation and wildlife and championing the work being undertaken to protect this fragile landscape. You’ll be involved in delivering practical activities across the site to make a personal and tangible difference to the future of Ashridge Estate.
What it's like to work here
Reporting to the Senior Volunteering and Community Officer, you'll be working alongside members of the project, property and portfolio teams. This is a great opportunity to work in a beautiful and diverse area of the country on a range of activities that will make a positive impact and help protect the estate for future generations.
You'll be based at the Ashridge Estate Office but will spend a significant proportion of your time out across the estate, working on uneven terrain and in dense vegetation under all weather conditions, away from typical office facilities, with minimal direct supervision, and sometimes alone.
Your standard working week will be 37.5 hours. The role requires flexible working and you’ll be required to work regular weekends, bank holidays and evenings.
What you'll be doing
You'll be face-to-face with different visitors to communicate key messages and provide a high standard of visitor care at all times by answering questions, resolving issues and capturing feedback. You'll plan, organise and attend engagement and outreach activities in the community and on the estate to positively build relationships, share knowledge and raise awareness.
You'll be involved in aspects of our outdoor work designed to protect the habitats and wildlife in our care while delivering great visitor experience. Undertaking regular monitoring, you'll be measuring and inspection activities across the estate, working with and leading teams of volunteers to undertake specific activities.
You'll also assist with the creation of material and content to help communicate key messages, including monitoring reports, leaflets, websites articles, interpretation and social media posts.
Who we're looking for
We'd love to hear from you if you’re:
1. enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the benefits of volunteering
2. someone who loves working with volunteers, and who understands the legal differences between staff and volunteers
3. good at talking to, and getting on with, all kinds of people from all backgrounds, and you understand why great customer service matters
4. flexible and collaborative, a team player who’s happy to lead on and work with other people’s agendas towards a shared goal
5. well-organised, with good attention to detail
6. experienced in volunteering principles and practice
7. comfortable with IT skills (Microsoft Office), and managing budgets
