Job overview
This is an exciting opportunity to join the Practice Development team at Gloucestershire NHS Foundation Trust in the role of Fetal Wellbeing Midwife. This is an innovative role, in which the post-holder will be responsible for educating the midwives of Gloucestershire on fetal wellbeing and fetal monitoring. This will include contributing to, updating, and writing local guidelines and policies, as well as developing and delivering training sessions to the local midwifery workforce.
The role will require a small amount of clinical work (maximum of 7.5hrs/week), this would be carried out on the Delivery Suite. The post-holder therefore needs to be proficient in caring for intrapartum women and competent in clinical skills such as suturing and cannulation.
Main duties of the job
1. To lead on improving the standard of intrapartum risk assessment and fetal monitoring, in accordance with element 4 of the Saving Babies’ Lives Care Bundle (Version 3): Effective fetal monitoring during labour.
2. To support and work with the Practice Development Midwife in developing a Programme to achieve better birth outcomes.
3. To develop staff’s awareness in recognizing factors that could contribute to misinterpretation of cardiotocography (CTGs) and impaired clinical decision making.
4. To ensure staff are assessing fetal well-being in the context of the woman's health, pregnancy, gestation and stage of labour.
5. To develop midwives' competence and best practice when undertaking intermittent auscultation of the fetal heart in low risk women as per the Trust guidelines.
6. To support the current training packages and educational resources and local fetal wellbeing competencies in partnership with the Practice Development Midwives.
7. To report and provide constructive feedback on a regular basis, whilst identifying and disseminating learning from audits, outcomes, practice and teaching sessions.
8. To act as a role model demonstrating clinical leadership and midwifery expertise.
Person specification
Qualifications
* Active registration with the NMC as a registered Midwife
* UK-recognised Midwifery degree
* Evidence of ongoing professional development through maintenance of professional portfolio and registration revalidation
* Experience in a relevant speciality (fetal monitoring/wellbeing)
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
* Able to prioritise own workload and that of others as appropriate
* Acts as a role model and are able to lead by example to ensure the Trust’s values and behaviours are reinforced throughout their area of practice.
* Able to supervise non-registered and less experienced staff to ensure effective service and care delivery.
* Able to effectively and appropriately escalate concerns to reduce risk and promote patient safety
* Able to contribute to the development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of policies/protocols/guidelines relevant to area of practice.
Experience
* Previous experience of training and education
* Midwifery mentor (pre-2018) or Practice Supervisor & Practice Assessor qualification
