The Role
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Engineer to join our Highway Operations Team. The Highway Operations Team are responsible for designing and implementing maintenance schemes to improve the condition of the highway network.
In this role, you will undertake specialist or technical assessments and activities, making critical decisions within our service function. You will deliver specific services, collaborate with a professional team, and contribute to service developments. This position involves supervising and managing the work and professional development of others within an overall management framework.
Key Responsibilities:
* Manage complex cases, authorise work/remedial actions, and develop frameworks for work programmes to meet legislative requirements.
* Oversee a caseload of technical projects or inspections, leading all stages of scheme design and contract documentation, including cost estimates, to ensure projects are completed within budget and on schedule.
* Ensure compliance with Health & Safety legislation, Codes of Practice, authority policies, and other relevant regulations, including conducting risk assessments and preparing Health & Safety plans.
* Prioritise, organise, and control the investigation, identification, and implementation of maintenance and improvement schemes within the allocated work program.
* Consult with other teams, directorates, local authorities, statutory bodies, and organisations to ensure all parties are informed and their interests considered in highway schemes.
Valid driving licence and own transport, or be able to provide alternative, suitable method of travel is an essential condition for this role.
This position is currently based at our Castlewood offices in Clevedon. Please be advised that this office will be closing in 2025. Consultation is currently underway to determine the new location for colleagues based in Castlewood. This will be at Weston-super-Mare or within North Somerset.
Work Style

However, please note that during the induction period, it may be necessary to spend more time in the office to support your learning and development. This role falls into the category of Flexible Worker which means you can expect to work in the following way:
* 2-3 days in the office.
* Works both from home and the office, depending on the task at hand.
* Training is provided to help balance work-life and manage time effectively, with an emphasis on communication for team touchpoints and planning in-office days for collaboration.
About You
We are looking for an individual who is passionate about highway maintenance and who possesses the following skills and experience:
Essential Criteria:
* Level 5 or above qualification and experience relevant to one or more service areas.
* Knowledge and understanding of technical standards, safe working practices, and legislation for service areas.
* Excellent organisational skills, with the ability to manage and prioritise work to meet deadlines.
* Strong communication skills, with the ability to prepare and present evidence clearly and confidently.
Desirable Criteria:
* Approved professional qualification relevant to the area of work (e.g., IEng) or extensive practical experience within the service area, demonstrating a variety of technical skills and a sound understanding of standards, legal responsibilities, work practices, and processes.
* Experience supervising others within the same field of work.
