The role
The Head of Quality is responsible for leading and driving the overall quality strategy and ensuring that the company's quality standards are maintained and continuously improved across all functions.
This role involves strategic oversight of quality assurance and quality control processes, including the development and execution of the Quality Management System, as well as fostering a culture of "Right First Time" throughout the organisation.
The Head of Quality will manage quality-related resources, overseeing project quality, operational quality and central quality management activities, and ensure that all quality objectives align with business goals. In addition, this role will interface with customers, suppliers, and internal teams to ensure the effective implementation of quality initiatives, compliance with industry standards, and the successful execution of both internal and external audits. This will involve working with all departments in support of their quality improvement objectives.
Key activities
Quality strategy – planning and execution including but not limited to:
* bringing the ‘Nuclear Safety Policy’ and ‘Quality Policy’ to life within the whole organisation
* Reducing Cost of Poor Quality through prioritising QA/QC resources in the right areas of the business.
* Maintain and execute a programme of Continuous Improvement that is embraced by all corners of the quality department as well as the business at large.
Team management:
* Organise and conduct regular quality team meetings
* Resource planning, including recruitment, management of contract assignments, attendance, annual leave and overtime.
* Management of comprehensive suite of Key Performance Indicators related to company quality performance including ONCR statistics and trends, COPQ, Audit Compliance
* Produce and submit monthly board report with occasional presentation to the executive team
* Management of Special Process (NDT & Weld Inspection) and Weld Engineering personnel
Quality Management System - Administration of the Quality Management System (QMS)
* Management of Quality Concerns and Learning from Experience (LFE)
* Administration of the overall Continuous Improvement programme, including chasing progress and communicating regular status reports.
Project Quality Assurance – this function oversees the project and supplier quality assurance activities. Primary activities include:
* Support to the tender process ensuring all contract quality requirements are captured and understood and providing information to support the bidding process.
* Management of Supplier Notifications of Inspection (NOIs), Supplier surveillance activities and Final Release
* Review and Approval of Lifetime Records and presenting to the Client or third-party inspectors.
* Management of Final Release / Despatch Authorisation process
* Project quality assurance activities relating to site installation activities
Operational Quality – direct management of the Operational Quality Manager whose function is in charge of Product Quality. Primary activities include:
* Inspection of incoming goods/materials to ensure conformance to the Purchase Order
* All physical inspections – Dimensional, NDT, Visual, Cleanliness etc
* Surveillance of shop floor activities e.g. patrol inspection, witnessing of operations, review of output documentation
* Dimensional Inspection, Weld Inspection & NDT.
Knowledge and experience:
Minimum of Bachelor of Engineering (Hons).
Chartered Quality Institute status or working towards this.
Experience with Nuclear Safety.
Ability to manage within an ISO 9001 Quality Management System.
Demonstrable ability to use Continuous improvement tools and techniques.
Experience in managing project QA/QC requirements and resources.
Ability/ experience in working with cross-functional teams and customers to achieve the business goals.
Strong managerial skills covering people/ team management and stakeholder management.
Client facing capabilities including ability to challenge requirements and propose pragmatic solutions.
Strong critical thinker and influencer.
Experience and application of:
Supplier QA/QC product verification
QC surveillance/audit
Welding/NDT techniques, processes and application
Developing and implementing Project Quality Plans and procedures.
Leading investigations / problem solving
Delivering bespoke QA/QC Training Material
Experience with MS Office products.
