Position Purpose
The Senior Controls Engineer is responsible for developing and engineering controls solutions for projects, ensuring that TAIT's solutions are engineered to the highest levels of quality and safety. As a senior team member, they are additionally expected to take the lead role on projects, mentor other engineers, and drive department initiatives.
The Controls Engineering team is responsible for control systems on multiple projects spanning all project phases. The engineer's involvement in a project will generally begin with design, and continue with engineering activities throughout manufacturing, shop and site commissioning, and customer handover.
Essential Responsibilities / Accountabilities
1. Identifies architecture and key controls technologies to meet project needs.
2. Understands entire automated systems, and how different disciplines interact (mechanical, controls, AVL, artistic, etc.).
3. Writes technical documentation both to fulfill project requirements and for internal purposes.
4. Performs safety analysis to satisfy both internal standards and external customer requirements; willing to pursue or maintain TÜV functional safety certification.
5. Develops custom PLC projects, HMI screens, and software configurations when required for projects.
6. Suggests and researches new products and solutions, and when necessary, builds and tests prototypes.
7. Assists in project bidding activities, including technical proposals and estimates.
8. Leads design reviews, offering constructive feedback to the team.
9. Ensures smooth handover to fabrication and integration teams.
10. Promotes and contributes to internal standards and processes.
11. Commissions and formally tests installed systems to ensure correct performance and satisfy customer requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
12. Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Technical Theatre.
13. 7+ years of experience in a related field.
14. Experience with large, distributed control systems.
15. Experience with closed-loop motion control.
16. Good knowledge of functional safety standards, including ISO12100, IEC 62061, and ISO 13849. FSEng certification preferred.
17. Familiarity with Beckhoff, Siemens, and Allen Bradley hardware and software.
18. Knowledge of TAIT Navigator software.
19. Basic knowledge of commercial aspects of projects.
20. Expected Travel: 15-20%. Must be able to acquire passport for international travel.
