At Islington Council, we are on a mission to create a more equal and inclusive borough, where every resident has the opportunity to thrive. Our values – Collaborative, Ambitious, Resourceful, and Empowering – underpin everything we do and define how we deliver public service. We call it CARE, and it’s central to how we make a difference. Now, we’re inviting you to shape the future of our newly established Internal Audit function. This is your chance to bring these values to life, driving innovation, efficiency, and a forward-thinking approach within a key area of the Council. About Islington We are incredibly proud of the positive and inclusive culture we have cultivated. We foster a supportive and collaborative environment where every colleague is valued, heard, and empowered to thrive. Our commitment to creating a workplace that nurtures professional growth and well-being has earned us recognition as one of the Top 100 Employers on Glassdoor, based on the glowing reviews of our team. This reflects the genuine respect and appreciation we have for each other, and the collective drive we share in delivering outstanding public services for our community. About the Role This is a unique opportunity to take the helm of our Internal Audit function and set its strategic direction for the future. With a clear focus on making an impact, you’ll be at the forefront of shaping an effective, proactive, and high-performing internal audit service. You’ll ensure that the function is embedded within the core decision-making processes across the Council, providing strategic insight and advice to senior leadership, councillors, and services across the organisation. In this senior role, you’ll have the autonomy to drive change and make a real difference. You will lead three critical areas – Internal Audit, Investigations, and Risk Management – as well as overseeing Fraud and Whistleblowing processes. As part of your role, you’ll be presenting regularly to the Corporate Management Team and the Audit Committee, driving accountability and strategic alignment with the Council’s priorities. We want the Internal Audit function to be a visible, central part of the organisation, actively engaging with different services to provide expert leadership and support. You’ll lead service reviews and investigations into sensitive and high-risk areas, offering practical advice on how to manage risk and address governance challenges. Ultimately, you will help ensure that Islington Council is not only compliant with best practices but also at the forefront of innovation in governance and risk management. What We’re Looking For We’re looking for a strategic leader who thrives in a dynamic, fast-paced environment. You’ll bring with you excellent judgment, the ability to build strong relationships, and a passion for shaping a high-performing Internal Audit function. We are particularly interested in your expertise in investigative pathways and risk identification, and how you’ll leverage this insight to navigate the complexities of a public sector organisation. You will be someone who is ready to take ownership, drive change, and work collaboratively with senior leaders to embed a robust audit and risk management framework that makes a tangible impact. If you are excited by the opportunity to shape the future of Islington Council and bring a fresh perspective to our Internal Audit function, we would love to hear from you.
