PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
CLINICAL
1. Determines nursing priorities and plans patient care.
2. Informs the team leader when changes in circumstances may affect patient care.
3. Recognizes and responds appropriately to urgent and emergency situations.
4. Maintains nursing records in accordance with the NMC and Trust guidelines.
5. Practices and promotes an economic, effective, and efficient nursing service.
6. Promotes and maintains a safe and therapeutic environment for patients in line with the Trust's Risk Management Strategy and Policies.
7. Supervises and demonstrates procedures to qualified and/or unqualified staff.
8. Respects confidential information obtained in the course of professional practice and upholds the principles of Caldicott and the Data Protection Act.
9. Contributes to the development of Essence of Care and Clinical Quality.
10. Ensures due regard is given to customs, values, and spiritual beliefs of patients.
11. Involves patient or carers in the planning and delivery of care.
12. Maintains the appropriate evidence-based knowledge and skills to care for critically ill patients at level 2 and level 3.
13. Ensures effective lines of communication within the department multidisciplinary team.
14. Provides information and support to patients/carers and ensures all those involved in the care are aware of changes in the patient's condition.
15. Assists in the safe custody, checking, and administration of drugs.
16. Recognizes and responds efficiently to emergency situations.
MANAGERIAL/LEADERSHIP
1. Coordinates and manages own workload.
2. Supervises others and participates in their education and development.
3. Practices and promotes safe and efficient use of all resources.
4. Manages allocated workload without supervision.
5. Monitors and maintains health, safety, and security of self and others.
6. Liaises with other members of the Management Team to ensure continuity and quality of patient care.
7. Appropriately delegates responsibilities to other members of the team when acting as team leader.
8. Maintains a Personal Development Plan and assists in the formulation and updating of Personal Development Plans of junior colleagues.
9. Reports all incidents, accidents, and complaints to the ward/department manager and completes Trust incident forms.
10. Supports and supervises more junior staff.
11. Ensures that all equipment is checked and maintained in safe working order.
12. Reports when standards of cleanliness and availability of supplies fall below an acceptable level.
ORGANISATIONAL
1. Utilises Clinical Supervision and Peer Group Support.
2. Participates in orientation, instruction, and supervision of junior staff.
3. Assists in the promotion of a suitable learning environment for all staff.
4. Actively participates in ward/department teaching programmes.
5. Leads responsibility for a specific function or area of knowledge/skills within the team, e.g., Link Nurse, Health Promotion Lead, etc.
6. Takes every reasonable opportunity to maintain and improve own professional knowledge and competence.
7. Participates in the research, audit, and development of new ideas, and assists with the implementation of research/audit findings in conjunction with other members of the ward/department team.
8. Acts as a Mentor and Assessor of nurses in training.
9. Maintains a personal record of professional development.
PROFESSIONAL
1. Attends mandatory study days/in-service training as per Trust policy.
2. Maintains active status on NMC register.
3. Always acts in accordance with NMC and the LHCH's Code of Conduct and guiding documents.
4. Adheres to Trust policy and procedure.
5. Undertakes Clinical Supervision.
6. Maintains up-to-date skills and knowledge and maintains awareness of professional issues.
7. Maintains a professional portfolio.
8. Acts consistently with policies, procedures, and clinical guidelines and encourages others to do so.
9. Contributes to the contribution audit of care via the clinical quality monitoring group.
10. Participates in patient and public involvement activities.
11. Ensures due regard is given to customs, values, and spiritual beliefs of patients.
12. Reports any behaviour undermining equality and diversity.
QUALITY
1. All staff will have responsibility for the safe management of the department and ensure the safety of others affected by the department's activities.
2. Liaises with the Trust adviser and ensures that any advice is implemented.
3. Ensures the Trust and departmental safety policies, arrangements, assessments, etc., are maintained and made available for staff and that they are adhered to.
4. Identifies and assesses risks to themselves and others.
5. Carries out safety inspections and ensures remedial actions are taken.
6. Ensures accidents are reported and recorded.
7. Reports to their line managers any identified actions to ensure Health and Safety.

RISK MANAGEMENT
1. The Trust is committed to approaching the control of risks in a strategic and organised manner.
2. The post holder must be aware of their individual responsibilities as detailed in the Trust's Risk Management, Health & Safety, and Incident policies, and those under the Health and Safety at Work Act. This includes the reporting of any untoward incident, accident, potential or actual hazard identified.

1. All staff are required to be familiar with the arrangements for safeguarding children, young people, and vulnerable adults and support the organisation in promoting the welfare of children, young people, and vulnerable adults.
2. Staff working directly with children, young people, and vulnerable adults will have a responsibility to ensure safeguarding and promoting their welfare forms an integral part of their duties.
3. Staff who come into contact with children, vulnerable adults, parents, and carers in the course of their work and/or have access to records will have responsibilities to safeguard and promote the welfare of children, young people, and vulnerable adults.
4. Staff who come into contact in the course of their duties with parents, carers, or other significant adults or children, young people, and vulnerable adults should always be mindful of safeguarding and promotion of the welfare of these individuals.
