Job Description
Job responsibilities
Under direction and supervision of a registered nurse, carry out nursing procedures following verification of competency and assist with the care and treatment of patients. This will include:
1. Assisting with meeting the comfort and hygiene needs of patients which will include washing/showering, oral care, escorting to the toilet, assisting with bed pans/commodes, making beds and dealing with dirty linen in accordance with procedures.
2. Assisting the registered staff with taking and recording patients' temperature, pulse, respiration and blood pressure, completing fluid balance charts. Recording observations on electronic devices and where appropriate paper charts.
3. Assisting with meeting the dietary needs of patients which will include the distribution of drinks and meals, helping patients eat and drink as required.
4. Make verbal reports to senior nursing staff regarding the patients in the ward as necessary, following this with clear and well written documentation as needed.
5. Ensure that patients are helped at all times to retain their privacy, dignity and individuality.
6. Participate in the treatment and rehabilitation of patients as required.
7. Direct and escort patients and visitors around the ward and emergency area to other departments.
8. Report back to registered staff all concerns about the patients' condition.
9. Take all reasonable steps to ensure the safe-keeping of patients' property, in accordance with trust policy.
10. Be aware of information governance and maintain trust policy and guidelines in both verbal and written forms.
11. Comply with all trust policies and guidelines with particular relevance to maintaining staff and patient safety.
12. Report problems with equipment and facilities to the helpline and if necessary, escalate to nurse in charge.
13. Be prepared to attend and undertake any necessary training, being aware of the need to develop and strive to increase one's personal knowledge of the speciality and general knowledge.
14. Report all accidents and incidences to the nurse in charge and where you feel confident to do so, on the hospital Datix system.
15. Undertake any working in new ways or equivalent packages as identified as integral to role requirements, ie Venepuncture and Cannulation, ECG.
16. Communicate effectively with the multidisciplinary team in order to promote efficient and effective patient care.
17. Welcome visitors and patients to the clinical area providing assistance, support and information where required.
18. Maintain good communication with other staff, patients and visitors including answering the telephone in a courteous and professional manner.
19. Prepare beds, trolley and equipment ready for assessment and management of patient care.
20. Assist in unpacking, checking and storing supplies delivered to the area, where appropriate highlighting if stock not delivered or when stocks are low.
Person Specification
Education Essential
* GCSE Maths and English (Grades A-C or Levels 4-9) or Functional Skills Level 2 or equivalent qualification/experience.
* Computer literacy, confident with ICT.
Desirable
* Healthcare qualification.
* NVQ / QCF 3 in Healthcare Evidence of Professional Development. Completed HCA academy at NUH Completed Care Certificate.

Knowledge & Experience Essential
* Knowledge of care and related procedures, clinical observations, relevant legislation.
* Previous experience dealing with customers, patients, or clients in a work environment.

* Physically able to perform the full range of nursing duties.
