As a Technician [Off Track], you will provide support to the Team Leader to organise and motivate the team so that work is undertaken safely, efficiently and to the relevant standards. You’ll work outdoors in a team, supporting essential maintenance to keep the railway running safely and smoothly for passengers and freight users. You’ll be responsible for maintaining, inspecting and repairing the land alongside the track network to keep the railway safe and efficient. This includes vegetation management, drainage and ancillary structures.
About the role (External)
Within Off Track we cover three main work types:
1. All aspects of tree work including climbing and felling
2. Maintaining flail strip using various equipment; on track plant with flail and sidecutter, brushcutter, hedge cutter and chainsaw
3. Managing areas of biodiversity, SSSIs and wildlife habitats
4. Working alongside an area with outstanding natural beauty
Drainage
1. Work involving all on track drainage systems which we use on track plant to maintain including jetter and sucker
2. Off Track drainage ie ditches, culverts keeping these clear of vegetation and often using a mini digger
3. Maintaining our boundaries with neighbouring land
4. Emergency fencing jobs ie animal incursions
5. Renewal of fencing sites
Our Technicians work outside in all conditions, at all times of the year, day or night. You’ll be involved in demanding manual work, often with the need to transport kit across tricky terrain. Being safety focused, respectful of rules and a team player will be critical as you’ll often be working next to moving trains travelling at high speed.
You may be asked from time to time to deputise for the Team Leader.
Please note you will be based out of our Banbury Depot and will be required to travel down to London Marylebone from time to time due to the patch the team covers.

6. Knowledge of permanent way inspection, faulting, maintenance and renewal techniques.
7. Conversant with standards, procedures and instructions.
8. Hold and retain competencies relevant to this post, required by business need.
9. Ideally hold (or be working towards) an NVQ level 1 or 2 (or equivalent) in a relevant subject or have attained an appropriate level of knowledge through equivalent relevant experience.
10. Able and willing to drive vehicles as required by business need.
