What you will be doing:\n\nDuring the Steelwork Welding Apprenticeship, youâll be trained in a range of MIG/MAG/Flux Core welding processes and given an appreciation of MMA welding. You will also gain experience using a range of tools and equipment to ensure the highest degree of quality is produced. This will include training on automated track welding machines. Specific activities could include:\n\nAs a Steelwork Welder, you will be trained to produce welds to the highest quality standards. This will involve using specialist hand skills learned through welding qualifications and on the job training. Welders work closely with other steelwork trades to complete the manufacture of the minor and major assembly sections of the ship. This involves producing both fillet and butt welds in all positions. You will also have the opportunity to learn how to weld materials such as aluminium and stainless steel. Automated welding processes such as Submerged Arc and the Bug-O welding track are utilised to improve quality where possible. \nAll welds completed will go through rigorous quality inspections by on site quality teams. These tests range from visual inspections to X-rays of crucial points of the ship.
