Healthcare Support Workers are the front line of the healthcare system and are a vital part of the team in supporting patients in different clinical areas. We are looking for keen, compassionate and dedicated Apprentice Healthcare Support Workers to join our team at West Middlesex University Hospital and Chelsea and Westminster Hospital. Apprentice HCSWs are individuals without prior qualification and experience related to the healthcare setting, but are ready to start learning and at the same time being in paid employment in the same role.
Main duties of the job
As this is an apprenticeship role, you will be required to undertake Off-the-Job/in-house training, online learning, and one-to-one sessions to develop your skills to prepare you for your End Point Assessment. You will also have tripartite reviews with your experienced Practice Development Nurse and line manager. On completion of your apprenticeship, there will be various career progression opportunities available such as nursing, radiography, digital and technology, data or business administration.

Job responsibilities
1. Under direct supervision assist with the delivery of care plan as described by the Registered Nurse/ Midwife.
2. Assist patients with their care needs as required, reporting any change in the patients condition to the registered nurse/ midwife.
3. Support the Registered Nurse/ Midwife and other health professionals with the mobilisation or transfer of patients.
4. Develop awareness of patients in pain and discomfort and report any changes in the patients condition to the registered Nurse/ Midwife.
5. Have an awareness of patients dietary needs, delivering meals, providing patients with drinks where necessary and providing assistance with eating and drinking if required.
6. Demonstrate an understanding of the different needs of individual patients and their carers/ families.
7. Develop an awareness of vulnerable patients and their safeguarding needs.
8. Under supervision, take and record the patients observations (e.g. temperature, blood pressure) as required and inform the registered nurse/ midwife of any changes in the patients condition.
9. Support the patients with their elimination needs recording quantities and frequency on the relevant documentation charts as prescribed by the Registered Nurse/ Midwife.
10. Develop an awareness of effective pressure area care and skin assessment supporting the patient to maintain their skin integrity.

Education and qualifications
Essential
* Willingness to develop within the health and care training framework.
* Willingness to complete apprenticeship within specified timeframe.
Desirable
* Care Certificate.
* English and Maths qualification Level 1 or equivalent.
* Apprenticeship in Health Level 1 or equivalent.
Experience
Desirable
* Volunteering or work experience within a health setting.
* Recent experience of working in a patient/client care setting or customer-facing environment.
Skills and knowledge
Essential
* Effective communication ability, particularly with patients and their relatives/carers.
* Able to provide individualised care and empathy.
* Able to demonstrate knowledge of equality and diversity.
* Able to demonstrate an awareness of the importance of confidentiality / privacy and dignity.
* Able to undertake routine personal care duties, referring to supervisor where necessary.
* Basic IT skills.
