Responsible for:
1. The Engineering Lead will oversee both the Mechanical Design and Electrical & Controls teams.
2. Direct hands-on involvement in mechanical design activities while ensuring effective management of sustaining engineering efforts to improve and maintain existing product designs.
3. Ensuring configuration control of Engineering Design Data, maintaining a quality output integrated into other factory systems.
Job Purpose:
The Engineering Lead is responsible for leading the sustaining engineering function, ensuring continuous improvement, maintenance, and support of existing designs. The role involves direct hands-on mechanical design work while managing design changes, solving technical challenges, and optimising the performance and manufacturability of the product portfolio. The position also requires mentoring and coordinating cross-functional teams to achieve engineering and operational goals.
Key Relationships:
External: Customers, Suppliers & Vendors, Regulatory Bodies
Internal: Engineering Team incl. Installation & Commissioning Engineers, Sales/After Sales Support, and Operations Personnel.
Budget Responsibility:
The role involves designing cost-effective mechanical, electrical and control systems while adhering to the financial constraints of each project.
Main Responsibilities:
1. Lead and manage the sustaining engineering function, overseeing both mechanical and electrical/control design teams.
2. Directly participate in hands-on mechanical design tasks, including the development and modification of components and systems.
3. Create detailed mechanical designs using CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks) and conduct performance evaluations through engineering calculations and simulations.
4. Ensure ongoing support for existing product lines by addressing design updates, modifications, and quality improvements.
5. Develop and implement processes to track and manage design changes, ensuring compliance with regulatory and industry standards.
6. Drive root cause analysis for recurring product issues, working cross-functionally to implement solutions.
7. Lead initiatives to improve product reliability, performance, and manufacturability, ensuring design-for-manufacture (DFM) principles are integrated.
8. Collaborate with manufacturing and installation teams to gather feedback and implement design modifications based on real-world performance data.
9. Provide technical leadership and mentoring to engineers across both teams, fostering innovation and professional growth.
10. Support cost-reduction initiatives by identifying opportunities for design optimisation and material efficiency.
11. Manage the preparation and approval of engineering documentation, including design changes, BOM updates, and technical reports.
Qualifications & Experience:
1. Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (or a related field).
2. Experience in mechanical design, including hands-on work in a leadership role within sustaining engineering or a similar function.
3. Expertise in mechanical design principles, CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks), and simulation tools (e.g., FEA).
4. Knowledge of electrical design principles, with experience working alongside electrical engineering teams.
5. Knowledge of industry standards.
6. Experience with tools and processes for managing design changes.
7. Proven track record of improving product reliability and performance through design changes and engineering solutions.
8. Excellent project management and communication skills, with the ability to lead cross-functional teams.
