About Us
We are The Bartlett, UCL’s Faculty of the Built Environment. Individually, our departments lead their fields. In partnership, they develop new responses to pressing world issues. As a whole, they represent a world-leading, multidisciplinary faculty, united by the radical spirit of UCL. Our vision is of a world where everything that’s built aims to add to the well-being of people and the environment. In the Research Excellence Framework 2021, the Bartlett was recognised as the faculty where the UK’s most ‘World Leading’ and ‘Internationally Excellent’ built environment research is undertaken. 91% of research was deemed ‘World Leading’ and ‘Internationally Excellent’. Overall, The Bartlett is number one for Research Power in the built environment field.
This is a leadership role within the Bartlett faculty office, the Research & Impact team consists of five professional services colleagues, led by the Head of Research & Impact. The team supports, develops, and sustains the vibrancy of the Bartlett’s research, engagement and impact environments. Engagement is a term used to describe the many ways in which we collaborate with groups outside of academia, including policy makers, enterprise, community groups and the third sector. We support this work through delivering services based on the principles of transparency, equity, clarity and reflection. The Head of Research & Impact is a key leader in ensuring we have a research culture that enables innovation and risk taking and supports all voices to be heard.
About The Role
Stakeholder engagement, listening, driving collaboration and influencing strategic decision making are all important parts of this role. A deep understanding of how the REF cycle works and knowing how to support this work in a high achieving area whilst being respectful of workloads is crucial as well. An understanding of the research and impact landscape across the UK and internationally will help make the strongest applications, and an understanding of research collaboration beyond academia will strengthen this. Leading a direct team supportively and influencing beyond direct line management to create a collective approach to supporting all aspects of a fully rounded research culture is essential.
About You
Our research across our faculty moves into very different disciplines, so experience in a variety of different research environments would be beneficial, but having worked with different types of funders or with different partners is also important. Emotional intelligence is an important skill to be able to demonstrate as this role is designed to bring together different voices and different approaches to everyone’s benefit. An understanding of what it means to influence a research culture positively and ensure everyone is supported is also highly beneficial. You have multiple stakeholders to support and will need to continually manage workloads for the team. Experience of working with colleagues in different backgrounds and focuses (for example, academics, administrators, and others) is helpful. Having skills around setting expectations in the face of multiple requests is essential and being able to make collaborative decisions about what is done and what waits is vital.
