Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), the Finance Controller will play a pivotal role in establishing and developing MiAlgae’s finance function. This hands-on position requires rolling up your sleeves to manage daily accounting operations, implement robust financial controls, and ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements. You will also be responsible for line-managing the finance administrator and building a high-performing finance team to support the company's growth.

Duties
* Oversee all accounting operations, including accounts receivable, accounts payable, invoicing, general ledger, cost accounting and cash management.
* Run the month end close process, including preparing timely and accurate monthly financial statements (e.g. profit and loss, balance sheet, and cash flow).
* Run the year end close process, including preparation of the annual financial statements and responding to external audit queries.
* Oversee tax compliance, including VAT, payroll taxes, and corporation tax filing.
* Lead the budgeting process by working closely with the CFO and department heads to establish financial goals and then monitor performance.
* Review, track and report spend against grant funded projects.
* Working collaboratively with the CFO, provide financial forecasts, analysis and insights to support strategic planning and decision-making.
* Working closely with the CFO, ensure compliance with accounting regulations and standards.
* Develop, implement, and maintain financial policies, procedures and controls investigating anomalies where identified.
* Evaluate and enhance financial systems and processes to improve efficiency and support the company's growth, including implementing new financial tools and technologies as needed.
* Foster a culture of continuous improvement within the finance team and across the company.
* Line-manage the finance administrator, providing leadership, training, and development to build a high-performing finance function.
About You
You will be a proactive finance professional with a proven track record in high-growth SMEs or start-ups. Your strong technical accounting skills will enable you to develop and implement robust financial controls and processes. As a natural leader, you will mentor and develop team members, fostering continuous improvement. Your exceptional communication skills will facilitate effective collaboration across departments, providing financial insights that drive strategic decision-making. A bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, or a related field and a professional accounting qualification (e.g. CA, ACA, ACCA, CIMA) are required. In this role, you will take ownership of the accounting function, driving efficiency and supporting MiAlgae's mission to improve food security and reduce environmental impact.
Qualifications and Experience:
* Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, or a related field and a professional accounting qualification (e.g. CA, ACA, ACCA, CIMA).
* Proven experience as a Finance Controller or in a similar role, preferably within a high-growth SME or start-up environment.
* Strong knowledge of accounting principles, financial reporting, budgeting, and forecasting.
* Experience in managing financial compliance and regulatory reporting.
* Proficiency in accounting software (e.g. Xero) and advanced Excel skills.
* Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.
* Strong leadership and team management skills.
* Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
* Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
