Detailed job description and main responsibilities
1. Provide bedside supervision and instruction to members of the nursing team.
2. Demonstrate clinical expertise and act as a professional role model to all staff, both internal and external to the Trust.
3. Delegate appropriately to ensure consistent, co-ordinated care.
4. Apply specialist knowledge and skills to deliver a holistic plan of care for all patients.
5. Assess and monitor documentation and record keeping for care delivered to all patients, in accordance with NMC regulations.
6. Demonstrate specialist expertise and professional knowledge acquired through post registration academic study, clinical, leadership and management development. Work and act as a role model for professional practice and leadership.
7. Maintain and develop quality initiatives including 'Patient Involvement & Experience Strategy, Patient Satisfaction Surveys, and audit as part of a programme of Clinical Governance.
8. Maintain contemporaneous nursing records in accordance with 'West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust Guidelines for the Completion of Nursing and Midwifery Documentation' (2017) and 'NMC's 'The Code (2018).
9. Undertake the administration of medicines in accordance with NMC's 'The Code (2018) and 'West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust's Medicines Management Policy.
10. Ensure that you remain up to date with the use of Trust wide medical devices and ICU specific devices.
Person specification
Education and qualifications
Essential criteria
1. Registered Nurse.
2. NMC Registration. Diploma in Nursing. Mentorship.
3. Completion of an accredited post graduate Critical Care Course (minimum 60 credits) as defined in National Standards for Adult Critical Care Nurse Education (CC3N, 2016).
4. Evidence of ongoing development & education related to Critical Care.
5. Band 6 level clinical practice within critical care.
6. Completion of National Competency Framework for Registered Nurses in Adult Critical Care Step one, two and three competencies (CC3N, 2015).
Desirable criteria
1. Masters level appropriate academic courses related to speciality.
2. PGCERT in clinical education or equivalent.
3. Sign off Mentor or willing to undertake the course.
4. Leadership qualification.
Knowledge
Essential criteria
1. Evidence of active involvement in developing new ways of working.
2. High level clinical skills and knowledge relating to critical care nursing, including organ support.
3. Up to date knowledge of relevant political and professional issues in healthcare.
4. Awareness of the national guidelines and frameworks for adult critical care nurses.
5. Evidence of excellent communication skills including verbal, non-verbal and written.
Desirable criteria
1. Knowledge of change management.
2. Demonstrate knowledge of complex operational issues such as patient flow, capacity and staffing requirements.
Experience
Essential criteria
1. Experience in mentoring, assessing and supervising junior colleagues. Substantial experience within the critical care environment.
2. Ability to manage critically ill patients with highly complex therapies with minimal support.
3. Substantial Band 6 level clinical practice within critical care. Experience in teaching in clinical or non-clinical situations.
Desirable criteria
1. Evidence of contribution to department quality improvement projects.
