My client is a highly rated Construction brand with a national client base and established reputation. Active in both contentious and non-contentious markets, on this occasion they're looking to reinforce the non-contentious side with someone who wants to get fully involved in the team. Appointing another experienced lawyer will allow them to take on more work, which is something they are committed to in order to keep growing.
Structurally there's a big opportunity here, a space to be occupied really between 8 years PQE and Partner, with partnership on arrival definitely considered for the right candidate if that person has a few clients to bring, and that could be a very lucrative package indeed. Technical competency is essential, there's not scope to train up a less experienced lawyer, so most likely someone who is a Senior Associate or Legal Director will definitely fit the bill, with that uncontested promotion route moving forwards up for discussion.
The breadth of work the team handles includes all the typical stuff but also some more bespoke matters. They are hoping for experience in standard forms of contract beyond just the JCT suite ie. NEC contracts, ICC contracts, MF/1 contracts, FIDIC contracts etc, though having experience of everything is not essential in order for the firm to be interested in you.
The firm is progressively run by a fairly young partnership, indeed they'd already embraced flexibility before the pandemic. It's a hybrid work attendance and they're prepared to consider candidates who may live in other legal centres but who'd attend the office in Leeds several times a month, how that might look will be sorted through direct discussion with a candidate but nothing has been ruled out. If it comes to opening an office specifically to accommodate a Partner or a team they're open to that.
Overall it's an exciting opportunity for someone who perhaps sees the attraction of being free of the big firm cultures where Construction is so frequently practised….this is another way in an alternative environment. In-house lawyers with the non-contentious expertise might be considered too, it'd be a soft landing into private practice where your expertise would be fully harnessed.
Brooke Thornham Consulting advertisements use PQE levels purely as a guide to the level of experience required for the role and this does not prohibit applications from candidates who are able to demonstrate the necessary skills and experience. We aim to respond to enquiries as soon as possible but if we have not contacted you within 5 days then unfortunately on this occasion your application has not quite met the requirements of our client closely enough.
