The Purpose of the Role
The school is looking for an enthusiastic and professional Director of Reading and Literature to work across our Prep and Senior Schools from September 2025. The role is term time only working 9.00am until 5.30pm Monday to Friday.
The successful candidate will actively encourage a love of reading within pupils across the school and provide a welcoming and supportive learning environment in both our Prep and Senior Libraries. Along with running book clubs and writing clubs the Director of Reading and Literature will be expected to run and support pupils during Homework Club.
The role would suit someone who enjoys working with children, has a passion for books and reading but also knowledge and experience of maintaining and organising a busy library.
Key Responsibilities:
* Actively encourage a love of reading within pupils across the school
* Develop a range of initiatives which promote reading
* Support the teaching staff in reading lessons and induction for pupils
* To monitor reading ages through appropriate tracking mechanisms and develop systems for intervention
* Promote and instruct pupils in the effective use of online resources to support their studies
* Provide a welcoming and supportive learning environment in Prep and Senior Library
* To carry out the necessary administrative duties ensuring the smooth running of the libraries
* To support the English Faculty in enabling them to deliver the curriculum and provide an enriched learning environment
* To manage the daily homework club from 4pm to 5.30pm, to a high standard, liaising with the administrative team about pupil absence and updating school records where needed
Further Responsibilities:
* To manage the school’s stock of reading books and have familiarity with a Library Information Service (LIS)
* To track details of books borrowed against year and tutor groups and proactively intervene to encourage reading
* To develop a range of activities throughout the year to promote the library and reading
* To manage the physical environment of the library and ensure it is appropriately used by the entire community
* To ensure the daily homework club in well used and properly staffed
Skills and Qualifications:
* It is anticipated the successful candidate will hold a good undergraduate degree but there is no expectation they would also retain a teaching qualification.
* Knowledge of online office tools such as MS Word and Excel, plus a general level of proficiency with computer systems, will be necessary
