Space Crew Team Member (Part-Time) The award-winning National Space Centre is a unique visitor attraction and education facility. We are looking to recruit talented individuals to join our team in providing the best customer service in the industry. Talented individuals are required to join our Space Crew. As the ‘face of the Space Centre’ the multi-skilled role will incorporate all aspects of customer care, including ticketing, catering, retail and exhibition guide. Applicants should have proven experience within a customer-focused environment, working face-to-face with members of the public. Experience of working within a leisure and tourism environment is an advantage. You should have excellent communication skills and a flexible, adaptable and willing attitude towards work. A space science background is not necessary, but a commitment to be part of the team to deliver an excellent standard of service to the National Space Centre visitors is essential. Part-Time – Saturday or Sunday, with additional evenings as required. We expect any new part-time Space Crew Team Members to be available to work additional shifts during our peak periods (which are usually bank holidays and during school holidays, weekends and weekdays). Normal working times for a Saturday or Sunday : 09:30 – 17:00 though some flexibility of times will be required. Job Description – Space Crew Member Overall Purpose: Space Crew Members are the Front of House operators of The National Space Centre. The overall purpose of this flexible team is to provide an excellent standard of customer service, addressing all visitor needs and wants whilst providing an environment in which the customer can enjoy a first-class experience. This multi skilled role includes Ticketing, Retail, Catering & Exhibition. General Duties: The National Space Centre Space Crew members need to be a flexible team, able to respond to visitor and Space Centre needs as required. This will entail: Deliver optimum customer care at all times. Proactively providing general information and guidance to all visitors to ensure their experience is enjoyable, safe and of the highest standard. Working as a member of the National Space Centre team in ensuring that all Health and Safety regulations are adhered to, and that the Health and Safety of the visitor, and other employees are not compromised. Maintaining the highest standard of hygiene, cleanliness and tidiness at all times according to Space Centre staff guidelines. Maintenance of designated cleaning schedules to the highest standards of hygiene and cleanliness at all times. Assisting in the maintenance of the highest housekeeping standards throughout the National Space Centre site. Being as flexible as possible; and, with relevant training, helping the team in whichever areas of the Space Centre and its site require additional cover from the Space Crew. Answer to all visitor queries in a knowledgeable and friendly manner, endeavouring to respond independently – or referring to other members of staff as appropriate. Dealing with any problems that a visitor may have in a calm and composed manner, addressing issues as appropriate or referring the visitor to the Duty Manager if necessary. Undertaking Fire Warden and other Marshal duties as required. Maintaining a high standard of personal presentation at all times. Ensure all duties and activities are completed in line with health and safety guidelines and in accordance with company policy. Ensure all records and data are kept in accordance with GDPR and company policy. Undertaking training and development as part of the Personal Development Programme. Reporting to: Duty Manager Ticketing / Merchandising: Ticketing and Merchandising Crew Members will operate the ticketing desk systems and the retail systems. This will entail: Selling entrance tickets, guidebooks to visitors using the Gamma Ticketing system. Selling goods in The Shop using the Gamma Epos system. Assisting the Retail Administrator in maintaining stock levels and appraising stock items. To be knowledgeable about the products being offered for sale. Ensuring the presentation of the shop is maintained to the highest level by keeping shelves stocked and the area of the shop clean and tidy. Handling of payments – till procedures, cheque payments and credit card payments. Ensuring that any discrepancies are dealt with immediately and reported if necessary. Acting as a deterrent to thieves, with support from the Security Team, by maintaining an observant presence in the shop. Undertaking any other tasks relevant to the post as required by Duty Manager. Exhibition Guide: Exhibition Guides will facilitate the visitor experience at the National Space Centre within the visitor experience. This team will also be responsible for marshalling school groups during their visit. General duties include: Facilitating the visitor’s experience within the National Space Centre, by proactively providing interpretation of artefacts, exhibits and interactives and guidance to all visitors to ensure their experience is enjoyable, safe and of the highest standard. Facilitating visitor flow and orientation throughout the Space Centre. Familiarisation with the content and layout of the exhibition. Managing the safe entry and exit for visitors to the Sir Patrick Moore Planetarium – and ensure that environment is safe and clean for each new group. Operation of public programmes in the Sir Patrick Moore Planetarium. Operations of simulator and interactives. Briefing school groups as they arrive to the Space Centre and accompanying them to the entrance. Ensuring their efficient passage into the Space Centre. Assisting the Duty Manager in the management of the school lunch slots. Co-ordinate with Housekeeping Team to ensure efficient handover of these slots. Alerting the Technical Team to any problems within the exhibition or Sir Patrick Moore Planetarium. Co-ordinating with the Security Team and Curator to ensure the safety of visitors and artefacts within the exhibition. Ensuring that school groups leave the Space Centre efficiently, with their belongings. Assisting the Education and Space Communications teams when required in the delivery of schools & public events. Undertaking any other tasks relevant to the post as required by Duty Manager. Person Specification – Space Crew Team Member: Experience and Knowledge Experience of working face-to-face with members of the public Experience of working within a leisure and tourism or educational environment is desirable Experience of working with children in an informal or formal learning environment (paid or voluntary) is desirable Experience of working within a customer-focussed retail and / or catering environment and/or using tills is desirable Experience of food hygiene standards is desirable. Interest in astronomy, space science and science in general is desirable Skills· Good communication skills – written, verbal and interpersonal Numerate and literate IT Literate Ability to use a till is desirable.
