Department and Role Overview
* The Senior Infrastructure Engineer is responsible for the technical ownership of specific elements of the organisation’s global IT platform, providing subject matter expertise and acting as the point of escalation for any significant technical system issues.
* The Senior Engineer leads and actively participates in the delivery of global IT projects for the organisation, including technical resource management and task planning. Furthermore, they define the expected standards, policies, and documentation with which to administer and maintain the platforms operationally.
* The role requires strong cross-team and cross-region collaboration and the management of key vendor relationships on behalf of OPPD-ITSD.
* The Senior Engineer is a key resource within the Storage and Data Protection team and is responsible for the implementation and lifecycle management of business-critical storage and backup infrastructure within a large, virtualised estate
Key Job Functions
* The Senior Engineer is a key resource within OPPD-ITSD with technical ownership of key IT systems deployed across EMEA and North America. The role requires a strong and broad technical skillset, exemplary communication skills, project management discipline and the capacity to balance operational support and strategic project delivery requirements fluidly and efficiently. The senior nature of the role necessitates technical mentorship of junior staff and knowledge transfer to other related IT teams.
* The primary focus of the Senior Engineer is to maintain operational oversight and ultimate technical responsibility of existing systems whilst developing, building, and deploying new IT systems and initiatives for the benefit of the organisation.
* Through close partnership with the Architecture and Engineering function (A&E) the Senior Engineer realises the conceptual designs provided and then builds and operationally introduces modern technology platforms/solutions for the organisation. They oversee the handover to operational support colleagues and ensure that documentation is current and accurate.
* The Senior Engineer will work in a discrete, focused team dedicated to a specific technology area but will foster core relationships with other IT teams in both EMEA and North America.
Responsibility and Authority
* Technical ownership and support of the organisation’s storage and data backup systems.
* Preparedness to work unsociable hours and weekends and be contactable when away from the office.
* Undertake visits to Datacentre locations to support underlying technologies.
* Provide out-of-hours on call support, as part of a rota, for troubleshooting and resolving critical issues.
* Proactively monitor and enhance the storage and backup environments by ensuring alerts generated by the system are managed and progressed. Work closely with counterparts to develop global monitoring and reporting standards.
* Ensure that the organisation's Storage and Data Protection environment is available and ready for use at the business continuity and disaster recovery sites in accordance with the organisation’s requirements.
* Evaluate emerging security threats and action / implement patching schedules to protect the organisation’s systems against threats accordingly.
* Ensuring all technical documentation is maintained to an appropriate level and reflects the as installed environment.
* Integrate automated processes where relevant and appropriate.
* Managing and developing collaborative relationships with other groups within the IT division, locally and globally.
* Undertaking other reasonable tasks at the discretion of the Storage and Data Protection Lead and head of the section.
* Working with the organisation's architecture team to recommend and scope tactical and strategic enhancements to the organisation's EMEA IT environment, engaging 3rd party suppliers where appropriate.
* Managing the environment's hardware and software life cycles, ensuring that the organisation’s systems do not become affected by end-of-life or end-of-support milestones
Key Skills & Abilities
Knowledge
* Excellent storage knowledge, fundamental understanding of block and file storage protocols
* Demonstrable exposure to current enterprise datacentre technologies and practices
* Good networking knowledge, fundamental understanding of TCP/IP, DNS
* Good knowledge of distributed, highly virtualised environments running business critical applications globally
Skills
* Excellent Storage, Backup, and datacentre technologies skills (Storage – SAN, NAS and associated protocols, Enterprise Backup products etc)
* Hands on experience in datacentre environments including working with support partners to resolve issues.
Experience and Qualifications
* 10+ years strong, practical experience of managing the implementation and administration of enterprise storage technologies such as NetApp (Clustered Data ONTAP), Dell PowerMax / PowerStore, Dell Isilon, Dell Data Domain (PowerProtect), Dell ECS, and Unity arrays.
* Experienced with backup technology solutions in highly virtualised environments especially Rubrik (On premises and M365).
* Experienced with enterprise server / storage hardware.
* Good knowledge of networking in relation to storage and backup technologies and a willingness to engage networking teams to resolve complex issues.
* Knowledge of scripting / automation technologies such as PowerShell or similar API’s.
* Good understanding of Windows client / server operating systems and associated infrastructures
* Working experience within strict change control and mature process driven environments
* A proven record of accomplishment of managing projects to delivery within financial institutions (or other heavily regulated industry)
* Experience of working with IT Security teams to deliver Security related projects.
* Team Leadership (. mentoring junior staff) and/or Project Management (as an example managing the Network stream of a project) would be beneficial
