Job overview
Are you a Bone Densitometry (DEXA) Scanning Technician? We are recruiting for a part-time technician to provide specialised technical support in Bone Densitometry, involving a broad range of highly complex specialised technical work. The post holder will act as an operator for scanning under the Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations 2017. The service core hours run between 08:30-20:00 and this part-time post will support our evening clinics.
Main duties of the job
1. Perform Bone Density scans and procedures according to relevant departmental protocols, including acquisition, analysis, and presentation of DEXA images.
2. Learn to use specialised software, including application software (e.g., Microsoft Office) and utility software (e.g., Radiology).
3. Provide an efficient patient-focused service and develop a good working relationship with team members and other hospital staff.
4. Obtain optimum information from each patient investigation to facilitate speedy and accurate diagnosis.
5. Be involved in the continual development of all aspects of the Bone Densitometry Service in liaison with the Dexa Lead and the Assistant Divisional Manager.
6. Maintain high clinical standards regarding patient care, clinical risk, and Health and Safety.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
1. Uphold the Trust values, exhibiting professionalism and compassionate behaviour.
2. Ensure that the IR(ME) Regulations 2017 are understood and observed.
3. Undertake imaging examinations within the DEXA department to the standard required by the Department of Radiology.
4. Assess and interview patients prior to scans, ensuring correct preparation.
5. Be responsible for the patient’s welfare and comfort.
6. Assess the validity of Bone Density requests and discuss unjustifiable requests with the referring clinician.
7. Assist in the setting-up and maintenance of quality assurance programmes.
8. Assist in the training of staff in the use of equipment in the DEXA Department.
9. Maintain an up-to-date record of CPD activities in line with HCPC requirements.
10. Carry out monitoring procedures on equipment and report faults to Service Managers.
11. Maintain computer records in compliance with the Data Protection Act.
12. Check and maintain stock levels and ensure work areas are kept clean and tidy.
13. Liaise with other members of the multi-disciplinary team to ensure a high level of service is available to patients.
Person specification
Education
* BTEC (CNC) or equivalent.
* Completion of the National Training Scheme in Bone Densitometry.
Knowledge
* NHS Constitution.
* Understanding of hazards posed by ionising radiation.
* Good customer care practices.
* Knowledge of issues pertaining to Osteoporosis and Rheumatology.
* Knowledge of scientific and clinical aspects of the service.
Experience
* High standard radiographic skills.
* Experience as a Radiographer/Technician in Bone Densitometry.
* Experience working in a busy environment.
* Experience dealing with members of the public.
