An exciting opportunity has arisen within the surgical department for an enthusiastic Band 6 nurse to join our successful Enhanced Recovery Team here at The Luton and Dunstable University Hospital (To cover Maternity Leave for 14 months - secondment/fixed term). The successful candidate will primarily work with Colorectal and Bariatric Specialities, cross covering all other established ERAS speciality groups where needed.
The role of an ERAS nurse is to help develop and improve perioperative care using evidenced based practice. The aim is to reduce the risk of surgical complications which can aid a better recovery and potentially safer and quicker discharge.
The candidate will have an opportunity to work autonomously seeing patients on the Enhanced Recovery Programme (ERP) within the surgical directorate. You will be an important part of the multidisciplinary team of health care professionals who are involved with the patients care. This position allows for a more one to one approach with patient centred, holistic care encouraging structured pre active post op recovery.
The role allows you to be involved and influence care throughout the patient's surgical journey.

Main duties of the job
1. To see patients preoperatively to manage expectations and optimise for upcoming elective surgery
2. See patients on the ward, helping them to achieve their post operative goals and safe discharge criteria
3. Joining on ward rounds
4. Teaching relevant health care professionals on the principles of the programme
5. Support discharged patients through follow up calls and dealing with any questions or issues to help reduce the risk of readmission
6. Collecting relevant data, analysing and disseminating to the wider MDT
7. Basic computer skills, including use of Microsoft Excel spreadsheets and PowerPoint. Training can be given for the right candidate
8. You may be required to present at internal and external events (i.e. conferences and in-house meetings/teachings)
9. Attend and participate in MDT meetings to help progress the service

Person Specification
Qualifications
* Registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC)
* Proven track record of supervising and teaching health care professionals
* Recognised post registration qualification
Experience
* Experience in a clinical area at band 5 or above
* Experience in working with patients undergoing Colorectal and/or Bariatric procedures
Knowledge
* Knowledge of Enhanced Recovery Programmes
* Good clinical knowledge and skills in a surgical environment
* Experience in assisting and implementing guidelines, protocols and pathways
