[Midlothian]
Based within the Public Health Environmental Protection Team (PHEP), the role of Environmental Warden, with an emphasis to deliver the Pest Control service, is a key post for Midlothian Council Protective Services. This role will suit you if you like to work in a busy environment and achieve results that have a real positive impact on people’s lives.
You will be required to specialise in the provision of the Pest Control Service including conducting assessment of pest infestations, development and delivery of treatments plans and providing advice to various stakeholders for a range of different pests that impact public health. You will also work with the wider Environmental Health team to offer advice and assistance on pest control matters as required.
In addition you will undertake the full range of Environmental Warden Duties as required to support the PHEP Team. Those duties include dog control including on occasion the handling of stray dogs; Environmental Crime includes the investigation and enforcement of flytipping, abandoned vehicles and reported litter cases, providing advice and education on these matters.
The postholder will work as part of a small team however you will often be required to work alone and should demonstrate initiative and skills to complete the workload with limited supervision. The postholder is required to work closely with other Council Services to ensure that appropriate action is taken following enforcement activities.
You will be provided with relevant training and access to a Council Vehicle required to undertake this role.
KNOWLEDGE
Essential
Essential qualifications and knowledge will depend upon which role(s) the jobholder is undertaking. Jobholders will have qualifications and experience to meet the requirements of one or more of the following activities:
All roles
Evidence of competency in literacy and numeracy skills ; it is essential that the postholder holds a minimum of English plus 3 other National 5 level qualifications at grade A-C.
A driving licence enabling you to drive in the UK.
Litter, flytipping, abandoned vehicles & dog control
* Working knowledge of legislation and procedures relating to local authority activities and obligations on litter, dog control, abandoned vehicles, and fly tipping.
* Knowledge to assess dog behaviour and approach and control dogs, some of whom which may be aggressive.
Pest Control
Post holders will be expected to hold or attain within an agreed time period a relevant qualification to ensure technical competence and personal development (e.g. Royal Society for Public Health Level 2 Award in Pest Management or equivalent).
Knowledge of handling authorised traps and poisons for eradication of vermin and other pests.
A driving licence is essential
Desirable for all postholders
It is desirable to hold Higher English and Maths and a science subject would also be advantageous.
Experience in a role enforcing regulations and legislation.
Experience of relating to a wide range of individuals and interest groups through employment or voluntary work.

Based on 36 hours over 52 weeks per year, the minimum actual salary for this position is £30,243.53 per annum.
