Following our recent merge, we are looking to expand our team and an exciting opportunity has become available for a Healthcare Assistant (HCA) to join our friendly, supportive, and progressive practice and work as a key part of the clinical team.
The successful applicant must be able to organise and manage their own workload and have experience of working in a customer care environment.
Salary: Placement within this salary scale is negotiated based on skills and experience - £12.24- £13.31 per hour; £23,615 - £25,674 for 37 hours per week (pro rata) with the benefit of an NHS or NEST pension.
Hours: Full-time and part-time applications welcomed (minimum 10 hours per week), hours can be negotiated and a set weekly working pattern will be agreed.

Main duties of the job
Undertake and accurately record the following tasks:
1. venepuncture (patients of 16 years and over). HCAs who have undertaken specific training in paediatric venepuncture and been deemed competent may carry out venepuncture in patients aged 10 years and over.
2. raise ICE forms (according to protocol)
3. measurement of height and weight and BMI
4. urinalysis and preparation of specimens for investigation by the pathology laboratory
5. measurement of blood pressure and temperature
6. pulse rate and rhythm
7. peak flow measurements
8. recording of ECGs
9. smoke stop advice and referral
10. pulse oximetry
11. new patient checks
12. NHS Health checks
13. referrals to healthy living
14. health promotion
15. assist with clinical procedures such as implants, coils and minor surgery
16. chaperone
Extended HCA tasks only to be undertaken with (or working towards) NVQ 3 or other similar and relevant training and validated training and assessment of competence:
1. dressings
2. removal of stitches
3. B12 injections
4. diabetes foot checks
5. Shingles vaccinations
About us
The newly merged Weymouth Bay Medical Practice is a large friendly GP practice in Weymouth, Dorset (previously known as Royal Crescent and Preston Road Practice and Dorchester Road Practice) and both practices were inspected previously and were rated as Outstanding and Good by the Care Quality Commission.
The Practice cares for 26,000 patients with 3 purpose-built surgeries, one in the town centre of Weymouth (Royal Crescent Surgery), one in Lodmoor (Dorchester Road Surgery) and one on the outskirts, in the area of Preston (Preston Road Surgery). We are a training practice with a dedicated team of 21 GP Partners and 70 nursing and administrative staff, and we value the contribution of each staff member.
Job responsibilities
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POST
1. Clinical care working under direct or indirect supervision/delegation of clinician(s), working to practice protocols and guidelines. Those new to care should complete the Care Certificate. Training will be given on each of the tasks below before being carried out under indirect supervision. HCAs are responsible for ensuring that there is documented evidence of competence in each of the skill areas. Specific or mixed clinics may be organised by the surgery and protocols must always be adhered to.
2. Check and act on QOF alerts for any of the above tasks when dealing with each patient in accordance with the protocol.
3. Recognise changes in the patients' observations which must be reported and acted on.
4. Assist clinicians in emergency management of patients.
5. Enable patients to access appropriate professionals in the practice team.
6. Act as a chaperone.
7. Appreciate the principles of Healthy Living.
8. Provide relevant health promotion literature for patients care and programme management.
9. Clearly present patients' point of view to others.
10. Ensure stock items are ordered and provided in treatment rooms.
11. Maintain clinical equipment efficiently and report any incidents where servicing has not been undertaken.
12. Contribute new ideas to improve patient care.
13. Support and monitor patients during nebulisation therapy.
14. Prepare and maintain environments and equipment before, during and after patient care interventions.
15. Assist regulated professional while patients undergoing minor surgery.
16. Assist in raising awareness of health and well-being, and how it can be promoted.
17. Give accurate and appropriate information to patients and groups within own competence.
18. Where appropriate, provide support and encouragement to self-manage their conditions.
19. Have a basic understanding of long-term conditions including diagnostic interventions, treatments, and the principles of care and self-management.
20. Plan, develop and implement health promotion activities as appropriate e.g. smoking, exercise and diet.
21. Assess patients' readiness to change and provide motivational support as appropriate in cases of smoking, obesity and healthy living for older people.
22. To gain the underpinning knowledge and practical skills to administer basic life support or adrenaline if necessary.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* Literacy and numeracy skills.
* HCA course specific to general practice.
* NVQ level 3 or working towards this or equivalent qualification.
Knowledge and skills
