Court Thorn Surgery is a well-established, patient-centric GP practice located in rural North Cumbria. We are seeking an experienced and dedicated Practice Nurse on a part-time, seconded basis. This role offers the unique opportunity to mentor and support the development of an evolving nursing and healthcare team, while delivering high-quality patient care.
Our clinical team is currently made up of two GP partners, two salaried GPs, a Nurse Associate, a Trainee Nurse Associate, and two Healthcare Assistants, all supported by an excellent care coordinator team, offering a collaborative environment where patient care is our top priority.
Main duties of the job
Key Responsibilities
As a Practice Nurse, you will be responsible for providing a wide range of clinical services to our patients, including but not limited to:
Core
* Chronic Disease Management: Monitoring and managing conditions such as diabetes, asthma, COPD, and hypertension.
* Infection Prevention Control (IPC): Leading and working to the IPC Policy providing audits, training, support, and evidence of compliance to the practice manager.
* Cervical Screening: Performing cervical smears (PAP tests) to screen for abnormal cervical cells, in line with current national guidelines and best practice protocols.
* Immunisations: Administering childhood vaccinations, flu vaccines, and other routine immunisations.
Supplementary
* Wound Care: Performing dressings, leg ulcer management, and other wound care procedures.
* Health Promotion: Providing advice on lifestyle changes, smoking cessation, weight management, and sexual health.
* General Nursing Duties: Undertaking routine assessments, blood pressure checks, ECGs, and urine testing.
* Support for Minor Injuries: Assisting with minor injuries and offering initial assessments and treatment.
* Collaboration: Working closely with the GPs, healthcare assistants, and administrative staff to ensure the smooth delivery of services.

Person Specification
Qualifications
* Nursing Qualification: Registered Nurse (RN) with a valid NMC (Nursing and Midwifery Council) pin.
* Experience: Previous experience in Primary Care or a similar setting is desirable.
* Skills:
* - Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
* - Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
* - Strong organisational and time-management abilities.
* Clinical Skills: Experience in chronic disease management, immunisations, cervical screening, and general nursing procedures.
* Mentoring: Qualified, or working towards being able to provide mentorship and guidance to trainee nurses or other team members, helping them integrate into the practice and develop their clinical skills.
* CPD: Evidence of continuing professional development (CPD), with a desire to improve own skills and knowledge.
* Two years experience working within a GP practice or similar healthcare setting.
* Additional qualifications or training in areas such as cytology, asthma, diabetes management, or family planning.
* Knowledge of current NHS policies and guidelines.
* Understanding of the Care Quality Commission (CQC) clinical expectations.
