An opportunity has arisen for a substantive post (37.5 hours per week) Band 5 BMS Biomedical Scientist to join the dynamic and evolving team within the Haematology and Blood Transfusion departments at Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust.
The successful applicant will be a well-motivated enthusiastic HCPC registered BMS and must have experience in a high throughput Haematology and Blood Transfusion department.
The department is IBMS approved for training and has UKAS accreditation to ISO 15189.
Main duties of the job
The successful applicant will participate in the laboratory rotation through all sections of Haematology and Blood Transfusion and ensure that a quality service is being provided.
Good organisational, interpersonal and communication skills are required as is the ability to work flexibly. Previous experience of working in a UKAS accredited laboratory and experience of using a quality management system is required.
Following an appropriate period of training, the post holder will be required to participate in the out-of-hours service.
Job responsibilities
Communication and Working Relationships
* Advise other health care professionals of the technical and analytical validity of results using knowledge and experience, and to refer complex queries on to more qualified staff as required.
* Answer telephone enquiries regarding results and other general issues. To understand when to refer more complex queries onto Senior members of staff.
* Perform urgent analyses as requested by clinicians, utilising the most appropriate technique or analysers to provide results as soon as possible and telephone the results if required.
Planning and Organisation
* Plan own work schedules and those of BMS Trainees and MLA's, to ensure the results are issued from the laboratory efficiently.
* Prioritise the telephoning of abnormal results to requestors to enable timely actions and intervention to aid the diagnosis, treatment and care of patients.
* Maintain adequate stocks of reagents and consumables to ensure the service is provided at all times. Inform the Section leader when stocks are low.
* Work in all areas of the laboratory, organising and prioritising tasks, utilising specialist equipment when necessary.
* Perform specialist haematology / blood transfusion investigations under the supervision of Band 6 Specialist Biomedical Scientist.
Responsibility and Accountability
* Run Haematology /Transfusion main line analysers and instrumentation according to Standard Operating Procedures, utilising knowledge and skills to authorise patient results.
* Critically evaluate Internal Quality Assessment.
* Under the supervision of more experienced staff carry out routine maintenance of analysers to ensure minimum downtime and 24/7 availability.
* Troubleshoot and perform frontline repair to Haematology /Transfusion analysers in accordance with user manuals to maintain an efficient service and to seek assistance from senior staff when required.
* Adhere to SOP's and aid in their review and updating as required. Be prepared to comment on your own work or work of the department to improve service delivery.
* Interpret blood films using specialist knowledge. Report results in a timely manner, adding clinically relevant comments and inform the requesting clinician of abnormal or clinically significant results where a delay could compromise patient care.
* Determine the suitability of specimens and the appropriateness for the test requested. When necessary advise clinical colleagues of sample issues and the correct remedial actions to ensure the quality of results and patient care.
* Have knowledge of the factors affecting Haematology /Transfusion test results with regard to age and sex related reference ranges, sample state, analyser and method limitations. A basic clinical understanding of disease processes, clinical summaries and the impact of disease. To use this knowledge to evaluate and authorise results. To refer unexplained results to more qualified staff.
* Have knowledge and understanding of Quality Control systems, both internal and external, and to understand their impact upon result validity.
* Authorise completed work in a timely fashion so that results are available for other health care professionals to assist with their diagnosis, treatment and ongoing care of patients.
* Work at all times in accordance with principles of best practice with reference to all national and local policies and guidelines.
* Ensure issues and problems are resolved satisfactorily and referred to the Section leader as appropriate.
* Provide support for a specific area of the laboratory, upon direction from the deputy Head or head BMS including: Quality management, Training, Competency testing and Health and safety.
* Work with the Pathology Quality team to undertake audits of laboratory processes in compliance to ISO15189.
* Assist Section Leaders with processing EQA materials. This includes their timely analysis, interpretation of results, and generation of reports with findings and corrective actions.
* Assist the Clinical and Senior management teams with evaluation of new equipment or IQC materials in accordance with laboratory SOP's and procedures, to assist with data analysis when required.
Policy and Service Responsibility
* Participate in annual Individual Performance Review.
* Keep abreast of current developments in Haematology and Transfusion and to ensure accurate and up to date knowledge in the field.
* Active participation in Continuing Professional Development and maintaining Health Professions Council registration.
* Maintain own competencies as described by the department record of training and ongoing assessment.
Responsibility for Finance, Equipment and other Resources
* Carry out routine maintenance of specific analytical equipment.
* Perform specific haematology /transfusion tests in accordance with SOP's.
Responsibility for Supervision, Leadership and Management
* Provide advice and assistance to Trainee BMS and MLA staff to ensure staff work in full compliance with laboratory procedures and policies.
* Provide cover for senior staff in their absence and be prepared to work alone as required.
* Participate and assist in the ongoing supervision and training of trainee BMS and MLA's.
Information Technology and Administrative Duties
* Become competent in the use of the Laboratory Information Management system and specific analyser software.

Qualifications/Experience
Essential
* State Registration with the Health and Care Professions Council.
* BSc in Biomedical Science or equivalent.
* Experience of a high throughput Laboratory.
* Experience of UKAS accreditation.
Desirable
* Recent Haematology and Blood Transfusion in an NHS laboratory.
* Experience of using Quality Management System.
