JLL is also the market leader around real estate sustainability as demonstrated by its recent commitment to achieving net zero carbon in its UK workplaces by 2030 and leading the industry’s transition to a net zero carbon economy in the UK.
Our Sustainable Operations team in London plays a vital role in executing energy and sustainability as an embedded service acting as a differentiator for JLL and our investor clients. We use our leading expertise to support, challenge, and inspire our property management staff and clients to create a prosperous economy, a flourishing society, and a healthy environment.
About the Job
In this role, you will initially split your time (50:50) across two of our major UK investor accounts. Each account has a portfolio of circa 150 properties in the UK and has a designated ESG lead within our team who you would be working with, alongside assistant sustainability managers.
Your role would be working on energy and sustainability related tasks on the accounts. It is based on the PAM (Property and Asset Management) Sustainable Operations team. Work includes working across a broad range of themes such as energy/water/waste/biodiversity/social value.
You will act as an accelerator and collaborator across all areas of our agreed scope of work with the client. The role would also include support on quarterly reporting, working on data management platforms (e.g. Deepki) as well as regularly liaising with our property, facility, and asset management staff who have direct contact with tenants.
What this job involves:
Working collaboratively in our PAM Sustainable Operations team delivering against a broad range of energy and ESG related services.
Supporting all aspects of the account ESG scopes, as well as ‘leading’ certain aspects under the direction of the account ESG leads.
Having an active role in large-scale building performance improvement and net zero carbon programmes – e.g. support on tracking activities underway, chairing meetings, being involved in conversations with project managers and suppliers.
Being inquisitive across a large number of assets (e.g. being pro-active to highlight energy optimisation opportunities to our facility managers), as well as undertaking focused tasks on priority assets (e.g. working with asset managers to develop holistic ESG action plans aligned to planned preventative maintenance work).
Engaging in wider activities in the PAM Sustainable Operations group (e.g. team meetings, social activities, task-groups to develop standardised tools & templates, representing the team in industry groups such as the UKGBC, BBP or Managing Agent Partnership etc).
Key responsibilities include:
Support the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of all sustainability activities across the client’s real estate portfolio.
Building rapport with property managers, facility managers, and asset managers to regularly discuss ESG related matters and drive forward improvements across sites.
Working with suppliers (e.g. waste, biodiversity) to drive forward collaborative partnerships to improve holistic ESG performance across sites.
Supporting the team ensuring ESG data management platforms (currently Deepki on both accounts) are accurate, with a high level of data coverage and completeness (e.g. Scope 1-2 landlord data and Scope 3 tenant energy data). Note that prior knowledge of Deepki is desirable but not essential.
Supporting the team to analyse the data identifying variances and/or optimisation opportunities, seeking to improve the performance of all assets.
Driving forward automation solutions where possible (e.g. automated metering, work with innovative suppliers) to capture data efficiently reducing the need for manual tasks.
Analysing large datasets to support the ESG reporting and benchmarking. Ability to use Excel with medium/high level of confidence very beneficial for this.
Effectively tracking and communicating success stories to ensure a high level of awareness and engagement is achieved regarding the overall energy and sustainability program.
Identifying opportunities for new prop-tech and innovations applicable to the portfolios, as well as liaising with stakeholders on the practicalities of implementation.
Sound like you? To apply you need to be/have:
University Degree (environment, sustainability, science, engineering or related fields).
Experience in delivering sustainability related services to real estate and corporate clients.
Excellent project and time-management skills.
Attention to detail, accuracy, and excellence across all activities including analytical skills with the ability to handle large datasets.
Strong presentation and reporting skills.
A firm understanding of the key sustainability issues within real estate/built environment including, but not limited to; energy, decarbonisation, circularity, biodiversity, water, waste.
Pro-active “can do” attitude and collaborative growth mindset.
Passionate about working towards a sustainable future.
Desirable:
Good working knowledge of ESG data management platforms and Excel.
General ability to process ESG data (e.g. energy, water, waste) to benchmark buildings and highlight where opportunities exist.
Good knowledge of sustainability bodies in the industry (e.g. UKGBC, BBP, CIBSE, NABERS) and relevant guidelines/frameworks/emerging policies.
Understanding of green building certifications.
Basic understanding of ‘how buildings work’ (e.g. building services) to support having effective conversations around energy & carbon related matters.
