Applications are invited for the position of Senior Fellow in the Paediatric Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery.
This post is intended to support the development of senior trainees who wish to pursue a career as a Consultant Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgeon.
The new appointment will be expected to participate in the adult and paediatric trauma on call registrar rota at the Royal Sussex County hospital (Major Trauma Centre) and must demonstrate competence in the management of major adult and paediatric trauma.
Possession of FRCS (T&O) or equivalent and current ATLS is a requirement for the post.
Post available from April 2025 to August 2025 for a period of 6 months.
Main duties of the job
The clinical duties of the post include the following:
1. Day to Day Care of Paediatric Orthopaedic Inpatients
2. Supervised surgical care in paediatric elective and trauma list (expected to function at a senior level)
3. Supervised participation in outpatient elective, specialist clinic and fracture clinics
4. Department activities including teaching and training, MDT, audit & governance meetings, research.
5. On Call Commitment: The new appointment will be expected to participate in the adult and paediatric trauma on call registrar rota at the Royal Sussex County hospital as part of the bespoke rota.

Experience/ Qualifications
Essential criteria
6. Basic medical degree
7. Postgraduate qualification or appropriate specialist qualification
8. Full GMC Registration with a licence to practice
9. Advanced Life Support Certificate from the Resuscitation Council UK or equivalent
10. FRCS (Tr & Ortho) or equivalent
Desirable criteria
11. Higher Degree
12. CCT or equivalent
13. Attendance at Paediatric Orthopaedic courses, e.g. Paediatric Trauma course, Sheffield paediatric orthopaedic course, Graf hip ultrasound course
Clinical Skills and Experience
Essential criteria
14. Must have competencies or equivalent to the minimum level of ST6
15. Capacity to apply sound clinical knowledge & judgement & priorities clinical need
16. Demonstrates appropriate technical and clinical competence and evidence of the development of diagnosis skills and clinical judgement
17. Validated logbook documentation of surgical exposure to date
Desirable criteria
18. Experience in Audit Major Trauma
19. Experience in management of neuromuscular paediatric orthopaedics
20. Paediatric Orthopaedic Course in Hip Ultrasound, Ponseti Casting, Gait Analysis, Limb Reconstructions
21. High level of competence in assessment and surgical management of paediatric orthopaedics without direct supervision
