Merseyrail is a 50:50 joint venture between Serco Group Plc and Transport UK, and holds a 25-year concession agreement with Merseytravel. We operate one of the most punctual and reliable rail networks in the UK, with almost 800 local train services travelling between our 69 stations per day. We’ve recently introduced new electric and environmentally friendly trains on to our network, and we have ambitious plans to further modernise and enhance Merseyrail services for our passengers.
Development of Our Network
The original formation of the Mersey Railway dates to 1886 and was the world's second underground passenger railway. Merseyrail was established in 1977 after electrification and regional expansion. Over the years key new stations, like Liverpool South Parkway (2006) and Maghull North (2018), have been built, alongside enhanced ticketing systems (2009) and ongoing refurbishments throughout the network.
Equality, Diversity & Inclusion
We recognise the importance of not only being representative of the communities that we serve, but also ensuring that our staff feel they are able to bring their #bestselftowork. We believe that all staff have the right to equality of opportunity, should be treated with respect, recognise the value of and embrace difference, and should be supported to achieve their full potential as well as foster an inclusive and collaborative working environment.
Recognition & Reward
We believe that our employees are crucial in the ongoing success of the business, and employees who perform exceptionally, and exceed the business values and behaviours, deserve recognition and reward. Each year Merseyrail holds an annual awards evening “The Merseyrail Achievement Awards” where employees are recognised for their contribution towards the business.
Serving the City Region
Merseyrail is the heartbeat of our communities, delivering significant engagement and connecting our customers with education, employment, and delivering valuable community projects. As one of the most engaged rail operators in the UK, we aim to build on this legacy by delivering a bigger, bolder customer and community programme which helps to contribute to a fairer and more vibrant Liverpool City Region.
Transformation & Development
We are committed to modernising our infrastructure and services to meet the evolving needs of our community. By embracing innovation and collaboration, we are driving transformative change within the railway industry. Our dedicated team focuses on delivering projects that enhance efficiency, safety, and passenger satisfaction while ensuring the long-term sustainability of our railway network.
