About The Role
The Trading Standards Team in Sheffield City Council regulate and enforce consumer law to promote a fair and equitable trading environment through initiatives that encourage confident and knowledgeable consumers and businesses.
As an apprentice, it is not expected that you are fully able to undertake all the relevant duties initially. But it is expected that you are willing and able to move positively towards undertaking all roles and duties by the end of the apprenticeship, with the help and assistance of colleagues and the Principal Officer. Below are the core expectations of the team you will be working in and an example of the roles/duties you will be expected to undertake given the training and experience you will receive:
1. Ensure that duties are discharged in a professional and efficient manner, in accordance with agreed programmes of work.
2. Provide enforcement expertise and support in the designated area of activity.
3. Maintain a comprehensive knowledge of relevant legal and technical aspects of Trading Standards, including both criminal and civil law.
4. Carry out investigations, inspections, testing, sampling and other such duties to enforce Trading Standards legislation.
5. Undertake investigations, either on an individual basis or as part of the team, into identified or potential breaches of consumer protection legislation and prepare investigation reports to an evidential standard for legal proceedings.
6. Attend court and give evidence as required.
7. Investigate complaints from members of the public or where appropriate, signpost service users to partner organisations for specialist advice.
8. Participate in educational and promotional initiatives to both consumers and businesses and prepare and present advice to business and other groups as may be required.
9. Participate in project work which may from time to time be assigned to the service.
10. Make appropriate records of the work carried out and generally undertake administrative functions, respond to all matters including correspondence in accordance with council policies and maintain a high level of competence in the use of information technology.
11. Liaise with other enforcement agencies, Government departments and professional bodies.
12. Comply with corporate and statutory confidentiality requirements.
13. Undertake duties on a wide range of activities, to provide a flexible operational capability within the service.
14. Adhere to existing working practices, methods, procedures, undertake relevant training and development.
15. Carry out any other reasonable duties and responsibilities within the overall function, commensurate with the grading and level of responsibilities of the post.
In order to be considered for this role you need to have a full driving license or have the commitment to have passed for the end of the course.
Opportunity to move into a full-time position upon completion of apprenticeship.
