An opportunity has arisen for an innovative and process driven individual to join us in the position of Payroll Manager. Operating three bi-weekly payrolls, the post holder will have ample opportunity to streamline our current processes and work on exciting projects to take the function forward. We’re on a journey of continuous improvement and our ideal candidate would have proven experience of managing a complex payroll function in a fast-paced environment whilst driving change to automate and simplify the way things are done.
Responsibilities Include:
* Lead the end-to-end payroll process for circa 600 employees across multiple locations (using Sage). During our annual harvest process, this will increase to approximately 1600 employees (to include seasonal workers)
* Lead, manage and mentor one direct report. The Payroll Manager will have the opportunity to review resource requirements and structure the team/recruit additional support as they see fit
* Ensure timely and accurate processing of three bi-weekly payrolls, including salaries, overtime, bonuses, deductions, and benefits in accordance with contractual terms
* Ensure compliance with UK tax legislation, including PAYE, National Insurance, and pension contributions
* We are currently looking into the possibility of implementing an alternative time and attendance system; the Payroll Manager would play an integral role in the management and delivery of this project
* Submit timely RTI (Real Time Information) reports to HMRC, ensuring all tax, National Insurance, and other deductions are accurately reported
* Maintain accurate employee records and update payroll data as required (e.g., tax codes, bank details)
* Ensure the accurate calculation and processing of statutory payments such as sick pay, maternity/paternity pay, and holiday pay in line with UK regulations
* Produce payroll reports for management and finance, ensuring the accuracy of financial data
* Handle payroll-related queries from employees, resolving any discrepancies in a timely and professional manner
* Ensuring the time and attendance system is updated ahead of the payroll deadline and liaising with managers to chase up outstanding information
* Stay up-to-date with changes in UK payroll legislation, tax laws, and HMRC regulations to ensure ongoing compliance
Our perfect Payroll Manager would have:
* A strong background in payroll processing, with a thorough understanding of UK payroll and employment legislation
* Proven experience of managing a payroll function, preferably with the responsibility of managing others
* Experience using payroll software such as Sage, IRIS, or similar payroll platforms.
* In-depth knowledge of PAYE, National Insurance, HMRC guidelines, and UK pension schemes (auto-enrolment)
* Excellent project management skills. Experience of being involved in a new system implementation would prove advantageous
* Strong attention to detail and excellent organisational skills
* Excellent problem-solving abilities and the ability to resolve complex payroll issues efficiently
* The desire to drive continuous improvement and streamline/automate processes
* A high level of accuracy and confidentiality in managing sensitive payroll data
* Excellent communication skills, with the ability to interact professionally with employees at all levels
* The opportunity to manage a high workload in a fast-paced, FMCG environment
* A recognised payroll qualification (e.g., CIPP, or equivalent)
The hours you would work:
Monday to Friday, 8.00am-4.00pm (35 hours per week)
Salary : D.O.E.
