This is a 37.5 hours per week permanent role.
General Practice Assistants (GPAs) form part of a multi-disciplinary team within primary care and support the clinicians in the smooth running of the surgery by handling routine administration and some basic clinical duties enabling the clinician to focus on the patient. Ultimately the aim is to improve the patients' access/experience in practice.
General Practice Assistants will operate under the supervision of GPs and at times other appropriately qualified clinicians. The Assistant will undertake the HEE accredited training programme, aligned to the competency framework, equipping them with formal certification of their learning.
Main duties of the job
1. Arrange referrals on behalf of the clinician.
2. Explain treatment procedures to patients.
3. Responsibility for the processing of urine specimen submissions to the practice; dipstick of urine and action following Practice protocol.
4. Preparing patients prior to going in to see the GP, taking a brief history and basic readings in readiness for the GP appointment.
5. Supporting clinicians with administrative tasks, input to the clinical computer system and assisting the clinician in a variety of clinics not limited to but including: immunisation and vaccination, smear, wound, coils and implants, minor surgery, joint injections.
6. Stocking of clinical rooms.
7. Integral role in the infection control activity of the practice.
8. Complete simple clinical observations/investigations as directed, such as dipstick urine, taking blood pressure, ECGs, phlebotomy etc.
9. Help the GP liaise with external agencies (such as arranging admissions so the GP can continue with their consultations).
10. Extracting information from clinical letters that needs coding and adding this to patient notes.
11. Supporting with QOF reviews.
12. Supporting the recall system for Long Term Condition reviews.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* Educated to GCSE level or equivalent (2 GCSE grade A-C English and Maths).
* NVQ Level 2 in Health and Social Care and willing to work towards Level 3 or equivalent.
* A demonstrable commitment to professional development.
* Willing to work towards GPA certification.
* Qualified to NVQ Level 3.
* GP Assistant Certificate qualification/willingness to undertake a GPA training course.
