Main duties of the job
* To support the Unit Manager to manage a team of nurses, ensuring the development and maintenance of high standards of nursing care for patients receiving anti-cancer treatment.
* To take responsibility for the day-to-day management of the Dorothea Unit.
* To lead on specific areas of professional practice as delegated by the Unit Manager and Lead Chemotherapy Nurse.
* To deputise for the Unit Manager in their absence.
* To undertake the management of preceptorship of newly qualified staff, return to nursing staff and the mentorship of nursing students and health care support workers.

Job responsibilities
Clinical
* Deliver a high standard of nursing care without direct supervision, based upon a sound evidence base.
* Undertakes and documents a comprehensive, systematic and accurate nursing assessment of the physical, social and spiritual needs of the patient where appropriate.
* Creates and utilises opportunities to promote the health and well-being of patients in their care.
Managerial
* Participate in the recruitment and selection of staff below a Band 6.
* Plan the appropriate skill mix and staffing levels using competent duty rostering skills.
* Deputise for the Unit Manager in their absence.
* As part of the Directorate assist with the development and implementation of the Trusts Business Plan and Strategy for Nursing.
* Assist with the management of unit resources in an efficient and effective manner.
Professional
* Support the Unit Manager in the investigation of complaints within the unit area.
* Provide advice and specialist knowledge to other nursing staff caring for clients within the speciality.
Education and Training
* In collaboration with the Unit Manager, ensure effective orientation, supervision and mentorship programmes are in place.
* Assist with the appraisal and facilitation of professional development of all ward staff.
* Facilitate the development of nursing practice founded on up-to-date information and research.
* Create a learning environment which actively facilitates learning.

Person Specification
Experience and Knowledge
* Two years at Band 5 or equivalent within speciality
* Experience within Oncology/Haematology/Chemotherapy
* Ability to manage a team
* Experience of Research Management
* Experience of audit and resource
Qualifications and Professional Training
* RGN
* Post grad qualification in speciality or willingness to work towards
* Degree or equivalent level of experience
* N59 or equivalent
* C&G 730
* Teaching qualification
Specialist knowledge
* Chemotherapy/Oncology/Haematology experience
Personal Qualities
* Ability to motivate others
* Ability to have positive working relationships
* Good health record
* Good organizational skills
* Ability to work under pressure to meet required deadlines
* Evidence based practice
* Experience of using evidence based practice
* Frequently be able to deal with patients and relatives during distressing situations
Other
* To be able to assist patients to move using appropriate aids on a frequent basis
* To be able to transport patients using wheelchair/trolly or bed on a frequent basis. This will occur for short periods frequently throughout a normal shift and will require moderate effort
