A new Area Coroner is required to replace the current post-holder who has been appointed as Senior Coroner from 1st June 2025.
About the post:
The Area Coroner will work closely with the Senior Coroner to provide judicial leadership to the coroner team, conducting their own coroner investigations and inquests. The Area Coroner is the nominated deputy for the Senior Coroner during their absence and may be required to be available out of hours.
Lancashire County Council seeks an exceptional candidate with proven organisational, management, and efficiency skills, as well as experience in exercising sound judgement and effective communication. You will collaborate with the Senior Coroner, local authority, police, and other stakeholders to ensure value for money, performance, and financial efficiencies.
Knowledge and experience of coroner law and basic medicine are required, along with proven skills in conducting investigations and an understanding of court procedures. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential for dealing with sensitive situations.
Desirable qualifications:
Experience in running or sharing a coroner’s jurisdiction, including investigations, case management, and conducting inquests.
Who can apply:
The successful candidate will be a barrister, solicitor, or Fellow of the Institute of Legal Executives, satisfying the judicial-appointment eligibility condition with five years of experience whilst holding that qualification. Candidates must be under the age of 75, have experience as an assistant coroner or area coroner, and comply with the eligibility conditions within the Coroners and Justice Act 2009 (s.23 and Schedule 3).
Statutory Terms of Appointment:
Once appointed, a Coroner is a Judicial Office holder until reaching the age of 75 (compulsory retirement age), unless they choose to resign or are removed by the Lord Chief Justice or Lord Chancellor prior to their 75th birthday.
