An exciting opportunity has arisen to work within the Paediatric Therapy team at Derbyshire Children's hospital.
We are seeking a good team player to join our small but friendly therapy team to cover a maternity leave. Fixed term or secondment basis.
We are looking for someone who has an interest in paediatric neurodevelopment and neurological rehabilitation, but also has a breadth of paediatric experience.
Applicants should possess excellent assessment, clinical reasoning and treatment skills, specific to the management of those with complex neurological needs.
You will support with the management of less experienced staff and higher educational students, you may need to deputise for the Band 7 Team Lead as required and take initiative for service development.
The successful applicant will be responsible for a caseload of outpatients with delayed development and gross motor skills difficulties. The role also entails provision of outpatient and inpatient neurorehabilitation.
The inpatient caseload involves management of children and young people with acute neurological conditions. You will need to be effective at multidisciplinary and interagency working, to support transfer of care from specialist centres and to help coordinate post discharge transition to the community services.
The successful applicant will be expected to be part of the weekend and bank holiday working roster which involves the management of children
with respiratory and orthopaedic conditions.
To lead, plan, co-ordinate, deliver and evaluate the physiotherapy service provided to neurological and neurodevelopmental patients in
the acute trust on a day to day basis.
• To act as a highly specialist autonomous clinician with advanced, theoretical and practical knowledge and skills providing a very high
standard of effective, safe, timely, evidence based education and care for patients with a variety of complex Neurological and
neurodevelopmental conditions.
• To be responsible for the specialist education, training and supervision of less experienced staff, undergraduate students, medical,
nursing and AHP staff within the team.
• To work in partnership with healthcare providers in Primary and Secondary Care as well as wider social and educational agencies to
facilitate transition of patients with neurological and neurodevelopmental conditions to community services.
• To lead and participate in audit, service development and service evaluation, and promote an ongoing culture of change and
improvement within the service.

To act as an autonomous and highly specialised paediatric physiotherapist with responsibility for the management of a variable caseload including those with complex neurological needs.
To provide a very high level of neurological care to patients with complex neurological needs, on admission to acute wards covering all
neurological pathologies, in order to improve their quality of life and facilitate early hospital discharge in line with current guidelines and policies.
To provide spontaneous and planned advice, teaching and instruction to relatives, carers and other professionals, to promote understanding of the aims of physiotherapy, and to ensure a consistent approach to patient care.
To act as lead neurological physiotherapist for patients within the Children’s Hospital acute services, presenting with highly complex health, rehabilitation and social care needs.
To coordinate appropriate, timely and efficient delivery of multi-disciplinary services from partnership agencies, through direct communication/onward referral and organisation of case conferences.
To provide highly skilled training/ support and supervision for undergraduate physiotherapy students, facilitating the development of a clinically effective workforce and to promote the Trust as a potential employer.
Identify and implement innovative ways of working within the speciality. Promote and develop the use of evidence based practice to improve the outcomes of patient care.
To participate in the on-call rota, for provision of respiratory and orthopaedic care to patients on rostered weekends.
To be responsible for inducting and teaching student physiotherapists to graduate level on physiotherapeutic skills and knowledge within
paediatric neurological care, assessing and evaluating performance against university set criteria.
To provide specialist neurological / neurodevelopmental teaching to higher education institutions as required.
Provide support, guidance, clinical education and teaching to more junior staff. Assess and evaluate their competence, performance assessment and appraisal.
Be actively involved in professional clinical groups, such as CSP Clinical Interest Groups, Peer Review Groups and other professional
development activities across the region.
To participate in the departmental appraisal scheme as an appraiser and appraisee and be responsible for complying with agreed personal
development plan to meet the required knowledge and skills.
Be a visible point of contact for patients, visitors, relatives, and staff, acting as a resource for problems and able to clearly present the patients’ clients’ points of view to others. Receive and investigate any complaints received.
Lead the development of the specialist service and act as a change agent. Whilst encouraging others to be innovative and adaptable in their approach to change.
Promote the health and safety of patients, staff and the public by taking responsibility within their working environment(s) for identifying
risks/hazards and implementing control measures.
