P/T Personal Assistant / Companion (Female) Ref: 19/Kilmarnock/JL
How Many Hours? 3 hrs p/wk regular hours and occasional additional 9 hrs p/wk holiday cover.
When? Proposed Hours: Tuesday or Wednesday from 2-5pm for the 3 regular hours with 2-5pm on Monday, Thursday and Friday for irregular cover. There is funding for 12 hrs a week and another PA provides 9 of these. It is their holiday weeks which can be covered as well, included in the SDS funding.
How much? £12.00 per hr.
What needs doing? Support and Companionship to the employer, an educated lady in her early 60’s who lives in Kilmarnock.
Who is the employer? The employer lives with Parkinson’s Disease which affects her mobility and speech for part of the day. Otherwise she is as independent as possible, physically fit, and has many interests including being as active as possible, keeping in touch with friends, cooking, gardening, sewing, reading and music (listening and performing).
What in more detail? We need a PA who is available for support as needed for 1 afternoon shift a week, of 3 hour duration, so that her husband can have some essential time off from his role as main carer. While on shift, when the Parkinson’s Disease affects movement, support from the PA is needed to: enable a rest and relaxation period (which is the most important need), to move to and use the toilet safely, assist with appropriate clothing and heating adjustments to avoid getting cold or too hot, make hot/cold drinks and snacks etc when requested, and to assist with operating TV and Hifi. Some assistance with light household work and food preparation may be needed.
What sort of Applicant is useful, though not always essential? A knowledge or understanding of Parkinson's Disease, and/or experience of working with other mildly/variably disabled clients is desirable but a willingness to learn and be adaptable is essential. The Personal Assistant should be happy to take direction from the employer about the care needed but feel able to make suggestions which may improve the situation.
