Respiratory Nurse ~ Band 5
Are you a nurse who wants to work in a busy specialist area, with a keen interest in respiratory nursing? You need to have a can-do attitude and experience of working with and assessing patients with respiratory conditions.
This post offers the chance to develop skills and knowledge within respiratory care whilst being supported by team members.
The work is varied and you will be working independently within patients' homes and occasionally in a clinic setting along with attending a weekly respiratory MDT.
You will be supported to achieve the necessary skills and knowledge before working and assessing independently.

The post holder will undertake a range of delegated tasks, reporting to the respiratory physiotherapist and nurse Specialists.
You will assist in the provision of a high-quality and efficient service.
You need to be sensitive to patients' needs and adaptable in working in often a very busy environment.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The Respiratory nurse will provide specialist knowledge and advice on the management of patients with various respiratory conditions.
The postholder will be responsible for assessing respiratory patients, planning and implementing high-quality, evidence-based care, using clinical reasoning, knowledge and skills, in line with NICE guidance with a focus on supporting patients to remain at home or in another suitable community setting. The respiratory nurse will work autonomously, supporting senior colleagues, and seeking guidance and advice from colleagues as appropriate.
Undertake full respiratory assessments, including those who are acutely unwell.
Support patients to achieve and maintain a level of independent functioning in order to remain at home or in the most appropriate alternative community setting. This may include providing education to patients and their carers on treatments and medicines (in line with best practice) and making onward referrals when necessary.
Focus on the prevention of hospital admissions by providing ongoing individual self-management plans, which support optimal self-care in line with local and BTS/NICE guidelines.
Manage risk within own caseload at all times, completing risk assessments and ensuring knowledge of and compliance with organisational and professional guidelines.
The postholder will also contribute to audit and benchmarking activities, in order to support continued service development.
Person specification
Qualifications
* RN (Adult Branch)
* Current NMC registration
* Evidence of continued professional development
* NMC SSSA Practice Supervisor/Assessor (or equivalent) or willing to undertake within 6 months of appointment
* Specialist Respiratory Course or equivalent level of skill and experience within respiratory nursing care
Specific Skills
* Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team
* Time management skills and ability to prioritise
* Knowledge and understanding of chronic lung disease
* Ability to communicate sensitive, complex and confidential information, managing barriers to understanding and adjusting style to audience
* Full driving licence and daily use of a vehicle (business class insurance will be required)
