Thornton Tomasetti applies engineering and scientific principles to solve the world’s challenges. An independent organization of creative thinkers and innovative doers collaborating from offices worldwide, our mission is to bring our clients' ideas to life and, in the process, lay the groundwork for a better, more resilient future. We provide support and opportunities to our employees to achieve their full potential and cultivate a rewarding career.
Our Applied Science practice leverages a unique combination of technologies and expertise to engineer practical solutions to problems of national and international importance. We apply expertise in solid and fluid dynamics, materials science, acoustics, risk assessments, and computational simulation methods to solve complex problems. We perform research, mathematical modeling, software development, and design to manage risks to life safety in military platforms and installations, ships and submarines, critical infrastructure, tall buildings, public facilities, industrial and petrochemical plants, and automotive and airborne vehicles. Military, government, corporate, and academic clients value the validation of Applied Science’s software and the critical insights gained from correlating analysis with testing.
The Role
We have an opportunity for an Engineer (with up to 2 years' experience) to join our Applied Science Practice where we use our expert knowledge to develop technical and bespoke solutions for our clients. The role is dependent upon the experience and skillset of the selected applicant but will require supporting projects across a wide range of disciplines, with a focus on thermo-fluids and CFD modelling to support the development of our decarbonisation agenda. Our team includes a range of backgrounds including engineers, physicists, and mathematicians, and recent example activities include:
* Development of CFD solver for fusion power components
* Modelling of naturally ventilated Ivy League university theatres
* Fire modelling of EV battery failures
* Smoke and gas dispersion of offshore O&G facilities
* Risk assessment for wind turbine failure
* Nuclear safety-critical modelling of hydrogen releases
* Development of safety scheme for Hyperloop operations
* Accidental release dispersion modelling of carbon capture and storage pipelines
* Atmospheric storage tank failure modelling
* Heat transfer analysis for LNG storage facilities
Responsibilities
The candidate should possess exceptional interpersonal skills and outstanding oral and written communication skills - facilitating positive internal and client relationships. Excellent technical writing skills for engineering consulting applications are required, as are engineering/scientific problem-solving abilities.
Qualifications
* Degree (Masters and/or PhD preferred) in Engineering or a related STEM subject and must be able to demonstrate an understanding of fundamental principles and problem solving.
* Strong IT skills are required with an enthusiasm to learn new applications and packages.
* Knowledge and experience of fluid dynamics and CFD modelling is desirable, either from university courses, industry experience, or self-taught.
* Knowledge of programming languages is desirable.
Due to the nature of the work, the successful candidate will need to be able to obtain UK government security clearance. Eligibility requirements depend on individual circumstances.
