The salary attached to this 3-day per week / 0.6 FTE role is Teachers' Pay Range (Fringe) between £45,344 - £50,471 per annum (pro-rata for part-time) with an SEN allowance of between £2,679 and £5,285 dependent on whether the successful applicant holds the Post Graduate Diploma in Deaf Education.
We are excited to be hiring a new Advisory Teacher of the Deaf to join our fantastic FHE 16+ Team. If you're someone who enjoys working as part of a strong team and you share our passion to improve the outcomes and education access for post-16 students with sensory impairment – we have a great opportunity for you!
This position is for 3 days per week, across 39 weeks per year (term-time). You will have a work base at either our Weybridge, Woking or Reigate office, but the majority of your time will be spent delivering a service to post-16 deaf students, in their further and higher education settings across Surrey.
About the Role
Physical and Sensory Support (PSS) work with young people aged 0-25 with physical and/or sensory impairment. Our service facilitates inclusion and participation in all learning experiences so that each learner becomes a thriving, emotionally resilient and active member of the community.
The FHE 16+ Team within PSS provides a traded service enabling students aged 16 and over, who are either deaf, visually impaired or with multi-sensory impairment to access further and/or higher education. PSS FHE 16+ is a dynamic and busy team comprised of different specialist and qualified professionals including Teachers of Sensory Impairment, BSL Interpreters, Notetakers, Communication Support Workers and Multi-sensory Impairment Intervenors. The team works with students in Surrey colleges and universities, supporting on a variety of courses ranging from animal care and horticulture to masters degrees in philosophy and social work- and everything in between!
This is a highly varied and rewarding role. On a day to day basis you can expect to be involved in the following:
* Monitoring and reviewing policies, practice guidelines and quality standards relating to post-16 deaf students, ensuring relevant best practice and information is disseminated as required.
* Managing a complex array of issues and needs, operating in a collegiate and respectful manner at all levels.
* Advising college Tutors and Disability Managers on suitable provision for deaf students.
* Managing the in-class support arrangements for deaf students (provision of PSS student support workers)
* Delivering 1:1 tutorials with some of the deaf students on your caseload, on their college or university premises.
Shortlisting Criteria
To be considered for shortlisting for this position, your application will clearly evidence the following:
* Degree or diploma, Qualified Teacher Status, mandatory Qualification as a Teacher of the Deaf (or willingness to complete the qualification within 3 years) and experience working with children/students with deafness/hearing impairment
* British Sign Language level 1 minimum, or level 2 / 3 competency, to be able to communicate with deaf students who use BSL (BSL competence is not required for working with deaf students who don't use BSL)
* Detailed, contemporary knowledge and understanding of the nature of deafness and its impact on social, emotional, cognitive, language and behavioural development
* Understanding of the importance technology has in enhancing access to the curriculum and social environment
* Detailed, contemporary knowledge and understanding of the statutory framework for education in relation to SEND, the Equalities Act 2010, and the Inclusion Agenda
* Ability to communicate effectively in writing and face-to-face with post-16 students with deafness, families, and a range of professional colleagues
Please note you will need to have the willingness and ability to travel around the county to meet the demands of the role, often meeting students between the hours of 9am and 5pm.
