As the Engineering Manager of a newly established team, you will play a key role in shaping products that target the utilities market segment. In this role, you'll lead a small team while continuing to make hands-on contributions and thus driving the technical evolution of our products. You and your team’s primary responsibility will be to further enhance our Network Manager Gas (NMG) and Inspection & Survey (I&S) products. NMG is a system of record that focuses on managing the infrastructure and assets of gas utilities. I&S is a mobile application that can be used to capture field survey data, when doing inspections of various types of utility networks. Our Engineering teams are in Cambridge (UK), Denver (USA), Salt Lake City (USA), and Ghent (Belgium) and are responsible for designing and developing our geospatial products which are available both as cloud services and for on-premises deployment. You will be helping to develop the next generation of innovative geospatial products that support mission-critical operations for our global customer base. Duties/Responsibilities This role sets you on a leadership path, blending senior-level Software Engineering responsibilities with foundational People Management experience. We're seeking a seasoned Software Engineer who is excited about transitioning into a leadership role. As a core member of the Engineering team, you will drive new product releases and help expand our existing product suite. Your key responsibilities include: Designing, developing, unit testing, maintaining, and enhancing product features, with an emphasis on building a robust, scalable software architecture. Identifying, isolating, and resolving bugs to ensure the product remains stable and reliable. Conducting thorough code reviews and incorporating feedback from peers to maintain our high standards of code quality. Collaborating closely with Product Management to refine feature requests and ensure smooth transitions from concept to implementation. Engaging in an agile development process, participating in regular team meetings throughout the project lifecycle. In addition to your technical contributions, you will also be in a People Management role, overseeing a small team. Your responsibilities will include: Reporting on team performance and operational activities to the VP of Engineering. Managing your team’s workload and escalating risks or issues to Senior Engineering Leadership. Holding regular one-on-one meetings to support the motivation, career development, and overall well-being of your team members. Required Skills & Experience Essential You must have all of the following: Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to clearly articulate complex technical concepts to cross-functional teams, including Engineering and Product Management. Experience with mentoring and coaching junior developers. Professional background in building enterprise-grade applications in Python, preferably using Pyramid. Hands-on experience with building client-side applications in JavaScript/TypeScript and React. Experience with SQL and RDBMS technology (e.g. PostgreSQL, Oracle, SQLite). Understanding of Agile methodologies, with significant experience working in Scrum teams. Understanding of Object-Oriented Programming principles and the ability to apply them effectively. Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving abilities, adept at diagnosing issues. UK citizenship or permanent residency is required. Fluent in both written and spoken English. Desirable Ideally, you’ll have several of the following: Experience with managing a team of developers and/or testers. Experience with web mapping (e.g. OpenLayers). Experience with PostGIS or other Geospatial Information Systems (GIS). Experience with container orchestration (e.g. Docker, Kubernetes, Harbor, Rancher). Domain knowledge of the utilities industry (e.g. affinity with gas or electric networks). Education Degree in Computer Science or a related field; or equivalent industry experience. Supervisory Responsibilities You will lead a cross-functional team of up to three developers and automation testers, with potential for growth in the coming years.
