Responsibilities:
1. Develop code, implement and evaluate computational/bioinformatic methods and tools to support research and development in infectious disease genomics including AMR determination, and outbreak and relatedness information.
2. Create analysis pipelines and appraise and validate various tools’ performances.
3. Understand various sequencing devices and data types as well as have a good understanding of upstream laboratory processes.
4. Be familiar with current genomic repositories such as ENA, GenBank, GISAID etc.
5. Collaborate with cross-functional teams including academics, clinicians, computer scientists, biostatisticians, and biologists to develop and implement data-driven strategies.
6. Stay abreast of the latest developments in infectious diseases, bioinformatics, and computational biology.
7. Be innovative and take the initiative to introduce new ideas and approaches.
8. Set performance goals and provide regular feedback.
Required Skills:
1. A PhD qualification in bioinformatics, computational biology, microbiology, mathematics, genetic epidemiology, genomics, or equivalent.
2. Experience in infectious disease genomic analysis, epidemiology, and surveillance.
3. Having a scientific understanding of infectious disease genomics.
4. Strong programming skills in languages such as Bash, Python, R, Nextflow, Docker, etc.
5. Expertise in standard bioinformatics workflows and best practices for processing microbial genomic data.
6. Expertise in data structures for next-generation sequencing data, including transformations and output formats for efficient processing and analyses.
7. 3-5+ years of experience in bioinformatics and computational biology and an established or upcoming bioinformatic publication history.
8. Experience with large-scale genetic data analysis using bioinformatics tools and pipelines.
9. Proven leadership and management skills and excellent communication skills.
10. Ability to work effectively in a high-growth, fast-paced, dynamic environment.
Preferred Skills:
1. Experience working with cloud computing.
2. Experience with regulatory guidelines and systems e.g., FDA, CE, UKCA, EUCAST.
3. Familiarity with machine learning and data visualization techniques.
4. Experience working in a biotech or pharma industry setting.
5. A track record of launching an academic product in the commercial market.
6. Experience with biostatistics and modeling for infectious diseases.
