Job summary
This post is designed to offer specialist experience in the provision of respiratory support for chronic ventilatory failure and in the management of respiratory and non-respiratory sleep disorders. It will be suitable for individuals aiming at a career in these disciplines or in general respiratory medicine. Applications will be welcomed from those seeking post CCT experience or on a respiratory training programme looking for out of programme experience.
The post does not have educational or training approval, but there are educationally approved specialist registrar posts in the thoracic unit. The consultant staff will plan a training programme with the successful applicant to best suit the individual's objectives. Attendance at the East of England regional training days will be welcomed.
The appointee will be encouraged to participate in the research activity of the department and suitable new projects will be fully supported.
Main duties of the job
1. Participate, under consultant direction, in the management of patients in the unit, developing the ability to formulate appropriate management plans for both planned and emergency situations.
2. Participate in consultant led rounds.
3. Lead a weekly ward round reviewing and discharging patients as appropriate.
4. Work alongside the senior doctors in outpatient clinics.
5. Provide ward and clinic cover at SpR level for colleagues on RSSC.
6. There may be an opportunity to take part in the on-call rota for the Chest Medical Unit.

Qualifications
Essential
* MBBS or equivalent qualification.
* MRCP or equivalent qualification.
Experience
Essential
* ST4 and above, or equivalent level of training, in respiratory medicine.
* Appropriate competencies in relevant cardiopulmonary procedures, including airway management and bronchoscopy.
* Capacity to apply sound clinical knowledge and judgement and prioritise clinical need.
* Critical and enquiring approach to knowledge acquisition, commitment to self-directed learning and reflective/analytical approach to practice.
* Aptitude for practical skills, e.g. hand-eye-co-ordination, dexterity, visual-spatial awareness.
Desirable
* Experience of ventilatory support and sleep medicine services.
