Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine or Dual Accredited with Emergency Medicine or Anaesthesia
UNIVERSITY HOSPITALS OF LEICESTER NHS TRUST UHL is one of the largest teaching hospital trusts in England, serving a regional, national, and international population. Applications are invited for an enthusiastic and highly motivated Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine to join our expanding team. Applicants with single ICM specialty accreditation, or dual accreditation with either Emergency Medicine or Anaesthesia are welcome. All applicants must hold full GMC registration, be fully Accredited for Higher Specialist Training or will be eligible for inclusion on the Specialist Register within 6 months of the interview date. Applications are also invited from those on the Specialist Register achieved via the CESR pathway. The work pattern offered (5.5 PA ICU DCC, 3 PA other specialty DCC, 1.5 SPA) is designed to give the appointee the best opportunity to develop their clinical and non-clinical interests whilst most effectively supporting the department.
Main duties of the job
Principal Elements of the Post: ICU / ED
To provide Consultant cover for the Intensive Care Unit at the LRI. This currently has 25 level 3 beds used flexibly in a physical space for 28 beds.
1. Supervise and train Resident intensive care medical staff.
2. Work with the acute pain team to provide safe and effective postoperative analgesia to patients.
3. Take part in multidisciplinary case conferences.
4. Teaching post-graduate doctors and under-graduates, research and administration.
5. Develop the Critical Care Service along with the other Consultants at UHL.
6. Participate in the delivery of high-quality Consultant led 'shop floor' clinical care for Emergency Department.
7. To provide on-call cover and cover for Major Incidents.
8. Ensure high clinical standards are met through structured supervision of Specialist Registrars, Junior Doctors, Emergency Care Practitioners and Advanced Nurse Practitioners.
9. To deliver and promote excellence in teaching of medical students, paramedics, doctors, nurses and Emergency Nurse Practitioners.
10. To actively support and promote a culture of high-quality patient care through multi-disciplinary Clinical Governance, audit activities and quality improvement projects.
11. Actively engage in the non-clinical and administrative work that underpins excellence in clinical care.
12. To act in a way that is consistent with UHL's core values.

Job responsibilities
The overriding purpose is to support the provision of highest quality patient care through personal actions and continuous improvement.
1. Responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness, and the proper functioning of the department.
2. Cover for colleagues' annual leave and other authorised absences.
3. To participate in service development and business planning in collaboration with the other Consultants in the department, the CMG and local GPs and commissioners within the local CCGs.
4. Professional supervision and management of non-Consultant medical staff including the observance of local employment and human resource policies and procedures.
5. Responsibilities for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and contributing to undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing medical education activity, locally and nationally.
6. Participating in medical audit, the Trusts Clinical Governance processes and in CPD; attendance at audit and other governance meetings is mandatory.
7. In line with GMC Good Medical Practice, it is the responsibility of the post-holder to ensure that all duties are carried out to the highest possible standard, and in accordance with current quality initiatives within the area of work.
8. The post-holder is expected to respond in a timely fashion to legitimate requests from Trust officers, including investigations of incidents or complaints.
9. The post-holder is expected to participate in teaching and training of junior staff and other clinical staff groups.
10. The post-holder will be expected to maintain their continuing professional development (CPD) to be able to successfully revalidate.
Person Specification
Training & Qualifications
Essential:
* MB BS or Equivalent,
* Full GMC Registration,
* FRCA or equivalent.
* FFICM or equivalent.
* FRCEM or Equivalent.
* Eligible for entry/entered on the specialist register of the General Medical Council for Anaesthesia or Intensive Care Medicine.
* Dual (or joint) CCT in Intensive Care Medicine and Anaesthesia or within 6 months of CCT at date of interview or equivalent experience at consultant level.
* Completed advanced ICM training or equivalent (Step 2/Stage 3) as specified by the FICM, or equivalent.
* Provider status for life support course.
Desirable:
* Membership of relevant Specialist Societies or Associations.
* MD or equivalent.
Experience & Skills
Essential:
* Demonstrable experience and extended training in Adult Critical Care Medicine including extensive contemporary critical care experience in the last 2 years.
* Demonstrable extensive recent Anaesthesia or Emergency Medicine experience.
* Clinical Knowledge and Expertise: Appropriate knowledge base and ability to apply sound clinical judgment to problems; demonstrates clear, logical thinking/analytical approach; understands evidence-based practice.
* IT Skills, ability to use web browser, excel, word, etc.
Desirable:
* Evidence of relevant clinical specialty interest (e.g. Echocardiography).
* ATLS.
* FICE accreditation.
* Experience in transthoracic echocardiography.
Audit & Quality Improvement
Essential:
* Effective participation in and a commitment to clinical audit.
* Participation in a quality improvement programme.
* Experience of quality improvement work and audit.
Desirable:
* Undergone training in teaching and willingness to organise relevant audit activities including quality improvement evidence.
* Completion of formal courses in Audit and quality improvement.
* Published Audit including quality improvement.
Management
Essential:
* Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team and supervise juniors.
* Experience of leading teams and awareness of leadership styles.
* Ability to effectively organise, prioritise and manage clinical workload.
